Jammu/Srinagar, August 11 (Scoop News)-J&K Students Association here today expressed resentment over Kashmir University’s alleged data breach amid reports that its student database was spotted on ‘dark web’. In a Statement Additional Spokesperson of Association Ummar Jamal said that, “The University of Kashmir appears to have fallen victim to a cyberattack, which is quite concerning. It is shocking to learn that the allegedly database of Kashmir University students has been put on sale for just $250 on a hacking forum by “ViktorLustig”.

“The University authorities should take serous note of the alleged data breach as it jeopardizes the security and privacy of students". Even though the University released a statement regarding the incident stating that as per the preliminary analysis, the data in their database is unmodified, however, everything is not honky-dory “

“We request authorities to take serious cognizance of the matter because the alleged data breach claims to include important student information, registration number, phone number, email address, password, employee data and more.”, added Jamal.

J&K Union Territory President of Association Faisal Bilal termed it as deplorable. It's very shocking to see that kashmir University doesn't have robust mechanism for to deal with cybersecruity. The alleged data breach has put privacy of students on sale, not only the data that could lead to disastrous consequences. The purported number of 1 million students is huge. It's not clear how did the hackers got access to the data but the incident shows the poor cyber security mechanism of the university.

It's a huge privacy risk now for the students with their crucial personal data getting exposed and being available to cyber criminals. We demand accountability in this matter from the university and ask the administration to quickly set up an inquiry to find out how did this breach happen. He requested Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to hold probe into this matter and hold the people who have been given task of IT in university accountable followed by the strict action and KU should upgrade its cyber secruity to deal with such kind of breaches done by hackers on dark web.
