International Day of the Girl Child

Srinagar, October 11(Scoop News) - As part of the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, a function was organized by the Department of Posts at the General Post Office Complex here today.
Mrs. Usha Vohra, First Lady, who was the Chief Guest at the function, released a Special Cover brought out by the Department of Posts on this occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, the First Lady emphasized the need for focussed attention on female education and observed that we have to make continued efforts to further advance female education so that every girl gets educated. She added that this also calls for seriously addressing the issue of drop-out rate among girls who leave their studies halfway. She said that, along side education, the girls need to be taught skills to become economically self-reliant.
Referring to the declining sex ratio, the Lady Governor while stressing the need for effective enforcement of laws to curb female foeticide, said that the civil society must enhance awareness of the people against such social evils.
Mrs. Vohra complimented John Samuel, Chief Post Master General, J&K Circle, and the Department of Posts, for celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child and hoped that this Day would go a long way towards the enlargement of women’s empowerment.
Ms. Ramona Samuel presented a memento to the Lady Governor on this occasion.
John Samuel, Chief Post Master General, J&K Circle, highlighted the aims, objects and importance of organizing the function to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child. He thanked the First Lady for agreeing to be the Chief Guest on this occasion. He said that girls are excelling in all spheres of human endeavour and whatever is required should be done for their empowerment.
Ms. Ramona Samuel stressed the need for enlarging awareness about the need for the promotion of female education as this being the key to their progress and empowerment.
Amit Sharma, Director, Finance, and Jagdeep Gupta, Director Postal Services, J&K Circle, also addressed the function.
A brief cultural programme was presented by the school children on this occasion.
