Universities are seats of knowledge: Governor
Special Award Ceremony of 18th Convocation held at KU
Srinagar, October 17(Scoop News) - N. N. Vohra, Governor, today said that universities are seats of knowledge which provide an opportunity for students to achieve academic excellence and prepare themselves to become independent members of their families and contribute towards the advancement of the interests and welfare of the society and humanity at large. The Governor was addressing the Special Award Ceremony of the 18th Annual Convocation of the University of Kashmir, here today, after presenting degrees, gold medals, awards and certificates to the passing out and meritorious students in varied streams and disciplines.
The Governor, who is Chancellor of the University, observed that the present youth have a high responsibility to build a bright future for themselves, their families and their societies and must work hard to become useful members of their communities and utilize their knowledge and skills for the socio-economic advancement of the people of the State and the country. He said that the boys and girls of the State are highly talented and if they get the enabling opportunities and the required guidance they can compete successfully with the best minds anywhere else in the country. He particularly expressed his happiness that the number of girls who received medals, degrees and certificates was very significantly larger than that of the boys and that this promises a very shining future for our State. Referring to the unfortunate phase through which the State had passed in the past years, he observed that many opportunities had been lost but, instead of merely recalling the past, we need to look forward towards our future with confident hope and optimism and work tirelessly to build a prosperous and bright tomorrow for the State.
The Governor observed that it is a very happy situation that J&K, with over 1.25 crore population, has as many as nine universities, adding that our boys and girls must make the fullest possible use of this advantage. He observed that if we are able to pool resources by securing inter-varsity mutually beneficial collaborations in the arenas of teaching, research, libraries, extension projects, sports, cultural activities, sharing infrastructure and exchange of students and faculty the benefits of these seats of learning can be maximized for securing the speedy economic development of the State and welfare of the people.
Congratulating the recipients of the medals, degrees and certificates, the Governor observed that today’s function was in continuity to the 18th Convocation when, due to the paucity of time, all the students could not receive their medals, degrees and certificates on that day. He interacted with the awardees and wished them bright careers ahead.
Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister, who is Pro-Chancellor of the University, presented degrees and certificates to students and addressed the Special Award Ceremony.
Abdul Gani Malik, Minister for Higher Education, congratulated the recipients of awards, degrees and certificates. He observed that this will add to the trained human resource of J&K benefiting the State. Referring to the need for skill upgradation, he added that this will enhance the employability of the youth in the job market.
Earlier, Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, gave details of the Special Award Ceremony. He presented to the Governor and the Chief Minister mementos, photo albums and photographs of the Convocation Procession of the 18th Convocation where Pranab Mukherjee, President of India, was the Chief Guest and had delivered the Convocation Address on 27th of last month.
Prof. S. Fayyaz Ahmad, Registrar, University of Kashmir, who conducted the proceedings of the Special Award Ceremony, presented a Vote of Thanks.
Among those present on the occasion were Deans, Heads of Departments, Faculty Members and students.
