| Ladakh Lok Sabha Elections-2014 unfolding gradually | |  Leh- (Ladakh), April 3, (Scoop News)-Launching their poll campaign with great intensity for the lone parliamentary seat of Ladakh region, the two candidates belonging to rival political groups, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and Indian National Congress (INC), are battling it out in the vast spread constituency.
Spread over 75,000 sq km of mountainous area with a population of nearly three hundred thousand souls, the country's only cold desert constituency has nearly 1,60,000 electorate (81,168 males and 78,781 females) in twin districts of Leh and Kargil.
Ladakh is going to polls on May 7. Notification in this regard would be issued on April 12. The candidates can file their nomination papers up to April 19. The scrutiny of papers will take place on April 21 and the papers could be withdrawn till April 23.
BJP candidate, Thupstan Chhewang, who had won the seat earlier as an independent candidate in 2004, told Scoop News, "the initial response from the electorate is very positive and we expect a smooth sailing for our party in these elections".
"I am very hopeful of the outcome".
"I have been traveling all these days trying to convince my electorate and telling them to vote for our party for a prosperous future", he said.
When asked whether some national leader of the party was visiting the place for campaigning for him, Chhewang replied,"we are expecting some senior party leaders including Nitin Gadkari, former party president and others".
"We will also send a request to our party's prime ministerial candidate, Narinder Modi, to visit Ladakh. Let us see whether he concedes to our request", he said.
About his visit of neighboring district, Chhewang explained, "I called on all political and religious leaders in Kargil district and sought their help for my success in the elections"
INC has fielded its party district president, Tsering Samphel, for the seat who is contesting the same for the first time.
Gialchan Nurboo, a party lawmaker from Leh in the upper house of the state legislature, told this reporter that there is no "Modi wave" visible here, BJP is almost non existent in the region, and we are doing our campaigning as usual.
"We had organized 15 meetings with different party workers, panchs, surpanches and others till yesterday (Wednesday). They have been dispatched to their respective places for carrying out party activities", he asserted.
"All our in house differences have been sorted out. It is a single unit now and today we work together to ensure our party candidate's victory in the forthcoming elections", the lawmaker said.
"We uphold the decision of the party high command and we are working unitedly to win the seat now".
"Both political and religious leadership in Kargil district are holding their cards close to their chest. They have yet to open their cards. Both Samphel and Spalbar met all them there but so far we have not received any response from there", Nurboo admitted.
Nurboo said no national leader was visiting the place for campaigning in Leh, "we are doing it ourselves in accordance to our local ways and means".
May be, he said, "we may require some coalition leaders to visit a few places in Kargil district to persuade the people there to vote for our joint candidate, Samphel".(Scoop News)
