IDCF programme launched in Leh


Leh, July 28, (Scoop News)-Like other parts of the country, two week Intensified Diarrheal Disease Control Fortnight (IDCF) programme was also launched in Leh District by the Executive Councilor for Health LAHDC, Leh Dr. Sonam Wangchuk today in Leh which was attended by grass root level health workers and ASHAs in good number. The Programme Officers of Health, CDPO, Leh Padma Angmo, Chief Education Officer, Leh Tsewang Punchok also attended the inaugural programme.

The Executive Councilor Dr. Sonam Wangchuk addressing the introductory programme stressed upon the ICDS Workers to ensure that before mid day meal every child washes their hand. He said that it is again a great opportunity for the Health Workers, ASHAs and ICDS Workers to launch such a noble program in the district and hoped that they will spread mass awareness among general public for preventing diarrheal diseases in the district and wished for its grand success. He also congratulated and applauded the Health department, Leh for implementing different Health progrmmes successfully in the district.

While speaking on the occasion Dr. P.Wangchuk, Chief Medical Officer, Leh informed that the ASHAs and Health Workers have to play a vital role in the IDCF in reducing the incidence of the disease in the district through Health Education. The CMO informed that one of the major causes of diarrhea is contaminated water and to ensure a proper safe drinking water, the Public Health Engineering department, Leh has to play a vital role. Expressing serious concern over safe drinking water in Leh, Dr. Wangchuk said that an NGO working in Leh for the last five years on water recently revealed that most of the water source in Leh is not safe for drinking and requested EC Health to intervene in this matter for further investigation.

Earlier, while briefing about the IDCF Dr. T. Norphel, Dy, CMO, Leh informed that diarrheal diseases are seasonal disease and one of the major causes for mortality in 0-5 years children (11%). The programme shall be launched in two phases, in the Ist Phase (week) focus shall be given to prevention and control of diarrheal diseases during which Oral Rehydration salt (ORS) shall be provided to every under five children. In schools stress shall be given for safe drinking water and compulsory hand wash after toilet and before mid day meal and in the second Phase (Week) focus shall be given to create awareness among the masses about Diarrheal Disease, identifying nourished, malnourished children, monitoring of children growth and pulse, breast feeding, hand hygiene etc.

In the second phase of the session Dr. T. Samphel Distt. Immunization Officer, and Dr. Tsering Norphel Pediatrician SNM Hospital, Leh discussed the programme in detail with the Health Workers.
