JPPF celebrates Maharaja Gulab Singh’s birth anniversary
Demands naming JU, Airport after his name
Jammu, October 21, (Scoop News)-JPPF (Jammu Province Peoples Forum), an amalgam of more than 50 social, commercial and other organizations, a united voice of Dogras and a common platform for all Sabhas, Societies and business houses to raise their voice for the development of Jammu Province celebrated 222nd Birth Anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh, the founder of Royal Dogra Dynasty and first Maharaja of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, the second largest princely state in British India.

Throwing light on the life and achievements of Maharaja Gulab Singh, M S Katoch the working President of JPPF said that Gulab Singh was born on 21 October 1792 in a Hindu Jamwal Dogra Rajput family. His father, Kishore Singh Jamwal, was a distant kinsman of Jit Singh, the Raja of Jammu. He distinguished himself in several campaigns, including the conquest of Multan (1816). He also led an independent campaign in 1816 to conquer the hill-town of Reasi. In 1824 Gulab Singh captured the fort of Samartah, near the holy Mansar Lake.
Meanwhile, in the continuing intrigues at Lahore Gulab Singh's youngest brother, Suchet Singh, and nephew, Hira Singh, were murdered. As the administration collapsed the Khalsa soldiery clamored for the arrears of their pay. In 1844 the Lahore court commanded an invasion of Jammu to extract money from Gulab Singh. However the Gulab Singh agreed to negotiate on his behalf with the Lahore court on an indemnity of 27 lakh rupees. Lacking the resources to occupy such a large region, the British recognized Gulab Singh as a Maharaja directly tributary to them on payment of 75 Lakh of the war-indemnity. The angry courtiers of Lahore then incited the governor of Kashmir to rebel against Gulab Singh but this rebellion was defeated and Kashmir was taken over by Maharaja Gulab Singh.
Maharaja Gulab Singh died on 30 June 1857 and was succeeded by his son, Ranbir Singh.
Katoch further said that it is unfortunate that history of Dogra Rulers has gradually been deleted and even not a single day is being observed in the name of great heroes of Jammu and Kashmir who in fact founded this beautiful State of Jammu and Kashmir and sacrificed their lives for enhancing its boundaries from East to West and North to South. Katoch reiterated that the area of Jammu and Kashmir after independence handed over to the so called leaders by the Dogra rulers could not be got maintained and the major portion of area is illegally occupied by the two neighbouring countries which the Government is unable to get it freed.

JPPF asks Government to name University of Jammu and Jammu Airport in the name of Maharaja Gulab Singh. It would be a great tribute to the great hero of our State.
The members present on the occasion were Th Narayan Singh, Inderjeet Khajuria, Sardar Gajan Singh, Rajiv Mahajan, M.L Sharma, Amrit Magotra, Avinash Bhatia, Kamla Sharma, P.S Slathia, Jagdish Sharma, Pritam Sharma, R L Tandon, Gajan Singh Khalsa, Prof. B L Bhardwaj and others.
