| Tributes paid to martyrs of Hot Springs ambush at Leh | |  Leh,October 21, (Scoop News)- The Police Commemoration Day organised by SSP Leh and District Police Leh was observed at Police Lines Choglamsar today to pay tribute to the Martyrs of Hot Spring, Ladakh. On the occasion families of three martyrs of JKP Ladakh were also honoured.
Senior Superintendent of Police Leh Dr. Sunil Gupta was the chief guest of the occasion and as a mark of respect to martyrs he read the Roll of Honour, in which the names of 642 martyrs of police and para-military forces are read out who laid their lives for the nation in whole of India in the past one year. The same Roll of Honour is read out in all the police and para-military centres all over the nation on this day.
Speaking to media persons SSP Leh Dr. Sunil Gupta said, “Remembering the martyrs of Hot Spring of 21st October 1959, this day is observed as Police Commemoration Day and on this day all the martyrs are remembered and as a mark of respect flowers and khadags are presented on the Amar Jawan Memorial as a mark of tribute and their families are also honoured. On this day, the jawans are encouraged to work with same dedication and courage like the martyrs of Hot Spring”.
On 21st October 1959, a patrol party of Central Reserve Police Force was suddenly attacked by Chinese troops in Hot Spring of Ladakh to which the policemen battled with great bravery and were successful in sending the Chinese troops back but while fighting for the nation, 10 of the policemen died and seven got caught. On 28th November 1959, the dead bodies of the martyred policemen were handed over to India by the Chinese troops and the cremation of those martyrs was held with full police honours at the Hot Springs in Ladakh. Since then every police and para-military centre observe 21st of October as Police Commemoration Day – Martyrs Day to honour the martyrs.
As a mark of respect to the martyrs, ‘shoak shastra’, two minute silence and 11 air firing were fired and later wreath lying ceremony was held in which the chief guest, distinguished guests, guests and residents paid floral tribute at the Amar Jawan Memorial. On the occasion, families of three martyrs of JKP Ladakh region Sub Inspector Stanzin Nurboo (who died on April 5, 2011), Assistant Sub Inspector Sonam Dorjey (who died on December 13, 1999) and Constable Ghulam Abbas (who died on December 27, 1999) were also honoured who laid their lives in the line of duty.
On the occasion, JK police rescue team and representatives of Remo expedition were also honoured with cash prize and citations for their rescue and relief operations carried out and thanked District Administration and every other organisation who helped during recent flood in Kashmir valley.
Former Union Minister P Namgyal, Ex-CEC Tsering Dorjey, Station Commander Leh Brig. SS Dhadhwal, Commanding Officer LSRC Col. SS Patil, representatives of CRPF, Air Force, and ITBP, various religious and political heads and locals were also present.
Later, guests visited the photo exhibition of JK police while conducting rescue & relief operations, seminars and talks imparting knowledge about traffic rules, anti-smoking and other social evils at different schools and college of Leh which was followed by screening of an eight minute documentary ‘Khaki’ on the life of a policeman.
