NC likely to field Dr Farooq Abdullah for Rajya Sabha

Jammu, January 25, (Scoop News)-Jammu and Kashmir National Conference is likely to field its party president, Dr Farooq Abdullah, as a candidate in the forthcoming Upper House (Rajya Sabha) elections to be held on February seven, a senior party leader, requesting not to be named, told Scoop News.

“All members want Dr Sahab (Farooq Abdullah) to be the party candidate for Rajya Sabha. Nobody disapproves the choice and there is a virtual consensus on his name”, he added.

Interestingly, former chief minister and working president of the party, Omar Abdullah, had floated the idea when he asked Congress party to support Dr Farooq Abdullah for Rajya Sabha elections.

“And what of Dr Abdullah’s chances if Congress supports him”? he asked in response to a tweet by a journalist that Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Upper House, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has chance of getting re –elected to Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir if National Conference supports him.

“We have certain constitutional obligations to fulfill before we would formally announce his candidature, like oath, filing of nomination form etc”, NC leader said.

Dr Farooq is away in London these days where he is recuperating after his kidney transplant.
Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday issued three notifications for holding elections to four seats of Rajya Sabha.

The prospective candidates can file their nomination papers for all three elections till Coming Wednesday (Jan 28) before the Returning Officer (Secretary Legislative Assembly) or his deputy. The nomination papers will be taken up for scrutiny on January 29 while candidates could withdraw their nomination papers on January 31.

The seats fell vacant following the retirement of Saif Din Soz, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mohammed Shafi Uri and Ghulam Nabi Wani (Ratanpuri).

NC has 15 Lawmakers and Congress 12 with the support of three or four independent legislators can send one representative to the Rajya Sabha even if BJP_ PDP combined.
