Nukkad Natak staged at JU in observance of Beti Bachao Beti Padao Abhiyan

Jammu, January 29, (Scoop News)-In observance of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Abhiyan launched by Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India and the National Girl Child Day (24th January) ,a Nukkad Natak on the theme “BETI HAI TO KAL HAI” was staged at three different venues on the University Campus.

The programme was organised by The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu. The drama enacted by the artists enthralled the audience comprising students, scholars, staff and faculty members of the University.

Prof. R.D. Sharma ,Vice Chancellor University of Jammu, while addressing the procession called for generating awareness about the growth of girl child in healthy environs with thrust on their health and education. He also stressed on the need for the involvement of University fraternity and all in spread of such messages of social relevance to the civil society. Prof. Sharma also accompanied the procession for some time.

Prof. Sharma appreciated the initiative of the Centre for Women's Studies for organizing such events. He was accompanied by Sh. Jai Kumar Sharma, Special Secretary to VC.

Earlier Prof. Pankaj Srivastava, Dean Students Welfare, flagged off the procession from the Social Sciences Block from where it moved towards the administrative block.

The flag off was attended by a large number of faculty members, staff members, scholars and students of the University who enthusiastically participated in the procession.

The procession culminated in front of the Central Library where the first Nukkad Natak was staged. The Nukkad Natak's were also staged in front of Central Library, DDE and Education/ Sociology/ Law school and received a huge response at all the three locations. The Nukkad Natak , using the folk theatre medium, touched on the theme of dwindling sex ratio and life without females in the society.

The Centre recognizes that the Staff, Scholars and students are an important resource for the spread of information to the masses. The students come from far flung areas of the state and each one can reach out to many. Any Social change can be brought about by the involvement of the huge potential resource of the Nation i.e. Youth.

More inclusive growth must begin with children and women- breaking an inter generational cycle of inequity and multiple deprivations faced by women and girls, as related to poverty, social exclusion, gender discrimination and under nutrition. This is reflected by the adverse and steeply declining child sex ratio in children under 6 years of age which reached an all time low of 918 girls for every 1000 boys in 2011.

Discrimination against the girl child is evident in the form of gross neglect and gender based violence after birth - in infancy, early childhood and adolescence. It is also reflected in the unequal access to health, nutrition, care and education. If not addressed, child marriage, early and frequent pregnancies result in the adolescent girl child being denied her right to be a child - her right to childhood. National girl child day has been started as a national girl’s development mission by the Women and Child Development Ministry, Government of India since 2008. This mission raises the awareness among people all over the country about the importance of girl’s promotion. It enhances the meaningful contribution of the girls in decision making processes through the active support of the parents and other community members. The Nukkad Nataks were staged keeping all these factors in mind and the fact that the imbalance in the sex ratio is seen in most educated parts of India.

The Census 2011 data calls for an urgent action, because it highlights that the girl child is increasingly being excluded - not only from economic development and growth– but from life itself.

The Nukkad Nataks tried to depict exactly these concerns expressed by analysts after the Census 2011.

Among those who graced the occasion were Prof. Jigar Mohd. Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Rajni Dhingra, Dean Faculty of Sciences and HOD Home Science,Prof. Neeru Sharma, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, Prof. V.D. Singh, Director DDE, Prof. Anita Billawaria Director, Centre for History of Jammu & Ladakh Region, Prof. Poonam Dhawan, Director, Department of Life Long Learning, Prof. Jasbir Singh, Provost Hostels ( Boys), Prof. Abha Chauhan, HOD Sociology, Prof. Shailendra Singh, HOD Deptt of History, Prof. Dipanker Sengupta, HOD Economics, and the faculty members of various departments.
