Dr Farooq,Omar greet people on annual Urs of Hazrat Gous-ul-Azam (RA)
Srinagar, January 31, (Scoop News)- President National Conference Dr Farooq Abdullah and party working president Omar Abdullah have greeted people on the annual Urs of Peer-i-Dastgeer Sahib Khanyar Shareef (RA), here on Saturday.

In a statement issued here, while greeting the people on the annual Urs of the great Awliya, the leaders have said that the teachings of the revered saint are based on the holy Quran and Ahadees-i-Nabi (SAW) which show a complete way of living for all the people.

Dr Farooq Abdullah said for centuries the shrine of Peer-i-Dastgeer Sahib Khanyar Shareef (RA) has remained epitome of Islamic culture and civilisation.


“He taught us religious tolerance, justice, equality and the teachings of Almighty Allah and last prophet Hazrat Mohammad (SAW),” Dr Farooq said.


“People should follow the footprints of this great religious saint. This holy shrine is visited by thousands of devotee’s everyday braving bone chilling cold, to observe the night long prayers which show the essence of this holy shrine,” he added.


The Urs is celebrated throughout Kashmir by organizing special prayers at different places in which thousands of people participate. People from different parts of the valley, including women and children, attend the special prayers.
Meanwhile, Senior NC leader Sheikh Nazir Ahmed (Advocate), has also felicitated the Muslim Ummah particularly people of the state on this occasion.
He said the Sufi saint taught people about Islam, humanity, and asked them to be humane, kind and compassionate to each other.
“The great religious saint ruled the hearts of Kashmiris for hundreds of years. His message of religion, love, brotherhood and humanity still finds resonance with the people,” Nazir said.
He urged the district administration to take adequate measures for the annual Urs.
Local MLA and General Secretary Jammu and Kashmir National Conference senior Advocate Ali Mohammad Sagar has urged the administration to take necessary steps for the devotees who will throng the Shrine of Hazrat Gous-ul-Azam (RA) on the annual Urs.
“People coming from across Kashmir throng this shrine in thousands every year and this has been a strict religious practise since centuries. The administration keeping in view the huge rush, should take all the necessary steps for the devotees so that they don’t face any inconvenience,” Sagar said.
Sagar directed for extending all basic facilities to devotees expected to throng the shrine which include adequate drinking water and power supply, transport facilities, medicare besides cleanliness in and around the shrine.
He asked the transport authorities to ensure adequate transport facilities for the devotees during odd hours so that the people visiting the shrine would safely reach to their respective destinations.
