Shaheen seeks interim relief for flood sufferers in Banihal
Jammu, March 30 (Scoop News)- Former Member Legislative Assembly and Senior National Conference leader Mr Ajaz Jan on Monday expressed grave concern of rising water level and flash floods in the Poonch district in the wake of incessant rains for the past forty eight hours and urged the administration to pool all the resources to meet the challenge.
“Situation is alarming, as the rains are continuing and the water level in various areas, Nallahs and streams is rising”, Mr Jan said while interacting with the media at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan here this afternoon.
Giving details of the damages caused by floods, he said six families have already moved from Chambar Kanari Panchayat, Chandak and Poonch City. Besides Khanater, Sawijan, Loran, Baracher, Babnoi, Bandi Khama, Ichan, Arai, Qarba, Islamabad, Kirni, Bandi Chachia, Gali Pindi, Sathra, Chaknara, Junnu Gam, Dedar, Loram, Saral, Nangali, Kankote, Khari Karmara, Ajote and Mandi area are also under threat of flash floods.
Mr Jan urged the administration to show urgency in meeting the situation and take all necessary steps to save the human lives in most vulnerable areas. He said the rains have already caused enormous damage to property and crops in Mandhi and Poonch blocks and reports were pouring in about people moving out of their homes to take shelter at safer places. “They need quick response and all assistance from the administration”, he said and expressed regret over the chosen representatives showing scant concern for the peoples’ problems. He said various areas have been inundated in the rains waters which call for immediate dewatering while close monitoring is highly needs in the areas prone to flash floods.
The former MLA asked the administration to formulate an exigency plan to meet the situation in case it worsens, as the metrological reports suggest more rains in coming days. “While a sense of confidence is needed to be generated among the people, concrete steps are also required to be taken so that people do not get panicked”, he maintained.
Mr Jan expressed his gratitude to Provincial President National Conference Jammu Mr Devender Singh Rana for appreciating the enormity of the situation and raising the issue in the Legislative Assembly. He hoped the administration will wake up and provide all necessary assistance to the suffering people.
“While the damages caused can be known only after preliminary survey conducted when the weather will hold up, the need of the hour is to provide free ration and preliminary assistance to the sufferers”, he added.
Mr Jan recalled the elaborate measures taken by the former Chief Minister Mr Omar Abdullah during September 2014 floods in terms of constituting apex level committees for both Kashmir and the Jammu regions to monitor the situation and to take preventive and corrective steps thereof and regretted over neglecting the Poonch area this year. “We appreciate the concern being shown for the Valley but at the same time the people of the border district of Poonch should not be neglected”, he said.
Prominent among those present at the press conference included, State Vice Presidents, Mr Rattan Lal Gupta and Th Kashmira Singh besides Sheikh Bashir Ahmed, Mr Jugal Mahajan, Mr Pradeep Bali, Mr Sajjad Shaheen, Mr Anil Dhar, District President Rajouri Mr Bashir Ahmed Wani and others.





Shaheen seeks interim relief for flood sufferers in Banihal

National Conference leader Mr Sajjad Shaheen on Saturday expressed concern over damage caused to shops in the Banihal town due to heavy rains for the past few days and sought immediate compensation for the sufferers.
In a statement, Mr Shaheen said incessant rains have also caused landslides in the peripheries of the town besides remote areas of Banihal tehsil, as a result of which people have suffered colossal losses. While seeking immediate survey of the affected areas by the Revenue authorities, he urged the administration to provide interim relief in terms of cash and rations to the sufferers. He said half a dozen shops have been washed away in the main Banihal town while several houses at Gagarnaag and Bohardar have been partially damaged.
Mr Shaheen said reports of devastation caused by floods have also come from Trigam, Khari,Buzla, Chaka Sarbagni, Amkote, Chaknarwaa, Thachi Neel, Maligam, Bingara,Mahu-Mangit while small temporary bridges have been completely washed due to floods in Mahu river which is flowing above danger mark. This has posed a grave threat to people living near the river. All road links have been closed due to land slides, he maintained.
Mr Shaheen, who contested recent Assembly elections from the constituency, has urged the government to take necessary measure and ensure safety of the lives and property of the people. He expressed solidarity with the sufferers.
