Leh prepares for tourist season
the tourist season DC plans putting various facilities in place

Leh, March 30 (Scoop News)-“We need to put soul into our existing infrastructure for providing effective and satisfactory services to even the last visiting tourist to Ladakh”, exhorted Deputy Commissioner Leh Saugat Biswas today in a meeting conducted with all the head of departments. The meeting was conducted in light of the upcoming tourist season in the district.

Taking note of the good number of deaths of tourists and labourers in the previous seasons due to mountain sickness, Biswas gave directions to the Health department to carve out mechanisms to spread the message to the visiting tourists about the importance of obeying the rest-regimen on reaching Ladakh. Present concerned officers also gave important inputs in this direction. The DC informed that the administration is already publishing health advisories for being distributed freely among the incoming tourists. It was decided that the district administration will tie-up with the various airlines so health advice is given to incoming tourists before alighting from the flights.

Looking at the considerable number of accidental casualties at Leh-Manali highway ASP Leh T. Gyalpo who is also holding the charge of Superintendent of Police Leh expressed the need of an ambulance on this route for emergency cases. Deputy Commissioner directed the Chief Medical Officer for putting in place ambulances on routes which are prone to accidents.

DC also had detailed discussion on developing a mechanism to facilitate providing oxygen cylinders in emergency prone areas in the far-flung areas for tourists where no medical aid centers are available. He assigned concerned head of the departments to work out a mechanism in this regard within a week’s time.

The importance of conducting frequent check on the food quality served in the restaurants especially during the tourist season was also deliberated upon. Special empowered teams will be formed for conducting frequent market checks and ensuring the best services for the tourists and preventing fleecing.

Biswas informed that the district administration is establishing a “world class” Tourist Information Centre which will act as a one stop shop for the incoming tourists. The information centre which will be run by the Leh Development Authority will provide all encompassing information viz hotels, travel agencies, trekking routes, police assistance, healthcare, bike and bicycle facilities, wildlife, banking, postage/courier etc. The CEO Leh Development Authority Dr. Zahida Bano will act as the Nodal Officer of this centre. He further informed that the Protected Area Permit and Inner Line Permit system will be further simplified for the ease of both overseas and Indian tourists. He invited suggestions and inputs from the house for having a complete database regarding the aforesaid facilities. Directions were issued to the concerned officers to prepare required database within a week’s time. He further informed that the information center will be an automated facility with data management software, monitors, and specially trained receptionists.

Among other points the house had discussions on topics like regulation of taxi and motorcycle fares, cultural and environmental norms (dos & donts), and also options for volunteering action.

Biswas concluded by saying that it is our responsibility to provide the best services to the tourists visiting Ladakh till the last one is satisfied. He assured that the tourists as well as the local industry will have a better experience in the days to come. Waste Management and Traffic Management are areas in which we have already started working he further added.
