Mirwaiz-led Hurriyat group heading for another split

By Saahil Suhail

Barely after a year, Mirwaiz-led Hurriyat group heading for fourth split as its six constituents have raised a banner of revolt against Chairman Mirvaiz Umar Farooq and its members.

Reliable sources revealed that Jammu Kashmir Salvation Movement chairman Zaffer Akbar Bhat, Muslim League chairman Hakeem Abdul Rashid, Kashmir Freedom Front Chairman Syed Bashir Indrabi, Syed Saleem Geelani Chairman National Peoples Party, Peoples league Chief Sheikh Yaqoob and Yasmeen Raja Chairperson Muslim Khawateen Markaz are up in arms against Mirwaiz for giving up 1993 constitution.

They said that rebels had held several meeting before revolting against Mirvaiz Umar Farooq, Bilal Gani lone and Professror Abdul Gani Bhat and were organizing programs independently since from last three months.

"Few leaders who continue to occupy top positions feel freedom movement is their personnel fief which is totally unacceptable as it is a movement for which common Kashmiris scarified their precious lives." A leader among the rebels told whishing anonymity.

He said that the Chairman Mirvaiz Umar Farooq is violating the 1993 constitution by advocating secret talks.

"Few people present in Hurriyat along with Chairman are advocating secret talks and even bilateralism even knowing the fact that Hurriyat Conference constitution does not permit it." He added.

He said that despite repeated requests from constituents, Chairman failed to hold elections democratically which is one among the reasons for rebellion.

Leader said that they (rebel six constituents) have started interacting with rest of the constituents present in the hurriyat conference and are about to form another (real) hurriyat.

"We have started negotiating with top pro-freedom leaders including Moulana Abbas Ansari, Javid Ahmad Mir, Shahid Saleem, Choudry Shaheen who are willing to be part of new hurriyat conference." He claimed.

Meanwhile, Muslim League chairman Hakeem Abdul Rashid, when contacted confirmed that he has left Mirvaiz's Hurriyat conference.

"Right now I can't disclose the reasons." He said, adding he is in touch with others who too have left amalgam.

Sources said that from past three months serious differences have emerged between the rebels and Mirvaiz group. "Rebels are demanding expulsion of Bilal Gani Lone who is heading People conference (B) as according to them Bilal took part in 2014 assembly elections and helped BJP indirectly." Sources said,

Bilal Ahmad Lone is the brother of Sajjad Lone who is Animal husbandry minister in state cabinet on BJP quota.

If rebels succeeded in forming another friction this will be another setback for Pakistan who is trying hard to unite separatist group in Jammu and Kashmir after 2014 elections, However sources said that the rebel leaders going to Join Hurriyat conference led by Veteran Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Highly placed told that Pakistan has been making its efforts to unite two factions of Hurriyat Conferences led by Geelani and Mirwaiz to present a united platform for separatist groups in Kashmir and for the same cause Pakistan even closed down one of the offices of the Hurriyat Conference in Islamabad in 2013 and from then both the factions are operating from same office in Islamabad.

However, in Kashmir Pakistan has so far failed in uniting the Hurriyat frictions.

Splits in Hurriyat

Hurriyat is a conglomerate of two dozen separatists groups formed in 1993 to fight for the "freedom" of J&K by holding of plebiscite under UN resolutions. Despite different ideologies the separatists came together and decided to fight jointly for azadi.

However, in 2003 Hurriyat formally split with 12 constituents raising a banner of revolt against the then chairman Moulana Abbas Ansari for not throwing out People's Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone over fielding of alleged proxy candidates in 2002 elections. Later, Mirwaiz led the moderate faction of the Hurriyat while Geelani became the chairman of hardline faction.

In 2014, Democratic Freedom Party president Shabir Ahmad Shah, National Front chairman Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Mahaz-e-Azadi chief Mohammad Azam Inqlabi and Islamic Political Party Mohommad Yousuf Naqash revolted against the Mirvaiz Umar Farooq and formed another hurriyat- Hurriyat conference JK.
