The session was presided over by the APHC leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

The senior Hurriyat leaders who spoke or were present on the occasion included Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Moulana Masroor Abbas Ansari and others.

Speaking on the occasion, senior Hurriyat leader Prof Abdul Gani Bhat said that Hurriyat is the collective representative body of the aspirations of the people.

He said that the public contact campaign has been started with a well planned strategy to reach out to the common masses as the movement was standing at a critical juncture where right steps have to be taken to take the struggle to a logical conclusion, added Prof Bhat.

He said the Kashmir dispute was a bone of contention between the two nuclear armed neighbors and this unresolved dispute has the potential to stoke fire of instability and insecurity in entire South Asia.

Moulana Masroor Abbas Ansari said the Kashmir dispute concerns with the future of 120 million people. He said that the people of Kashmir have politically matured and they understand the nuances of the struggle well so people should make Hurriyat Conference focus of their political platform and take the struggle forward till it reaches its logical goal.

Paying rich tributes to the people of Beerwah for their spirit of freedom and sacrifices, APHC leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in his presidential address said that our state is engaged in a separatist struggle for the past many decades.

He said the Indian establishment was using various oppressive means to suppress our freedom struggle. He said despite using every means to coerce and suppress people by unleashing atrocities, in last 50 years, the freedom loving people of Kashmir have defeated such designs and have even forcefully raised their political aspirations.

Mirwaiz said that the government has virtually banned freedom of expression, usurped political rights and imposed restrictions on our religious activities which aptly reflects the real face of Indian democracy in Kashmir.

While criticizing the government of India, Mirwaiz said this government was engaged on projecting its fanciful achievements through advertisements rather than addressing the crucial issues. He said due to the intransigent attitude of Indian government, the situation in the sub continent instead of improving was turning tense.

He said that the lingering Kashmir issue is like a volcano in the region, adding, by pushing this issue to back burner, stability, peace and prosperity of the region would remain an elusive dream.

Terming Kashmir as a police state, Mirwaiz stated that Kashmir is being ruled through the heavy hand of Police. He said the present dispensation in Kashmir has accepted defeat on political and social levels as, like their predecessors, they also have resorted to restrictions, arrests, bans and policy of repression to suppress the activities of separatist leaders.

Mirwaiz said the public contact programme has been started to strengthen and organize Hurriyat at grass root level to infuse new strength in the freedom struggle and defeat the efforts of conspirators to divide the society by stoking cultural, communal and sectarian infighting.

APHC leader said Kashmir was not a territorial issue but a political issue which needs to be solved according to the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiris. Asserting that separatist movement was part of our existence, Mirwaiz said laws like AFSPA and other acts are being used in Kashmir to suppress their rights.

He said that freedom movement can be taken forward only by discipline, unity and commitment. He said the aim of Hurriyat was right to self determination and Government of India can never break our will to achieve this by means of force and coercion.

Warning that the efforts were on to damage the Muslim majority character of Kashmir, APHC leader said that Indian media instead of portraying true situation before the people of India was misleading them by resorting to concocted stories about Kashmir, adding, hence it become important for us to tell the real story of Kashmir to the people of India.

Besides, he said Kashmiris should aware the international community about the true picture of Kashmir, adding, Kashmiris were not animals upon whom readymade solutions could be imposed.
The session also strongly condemned the killing of two civilians in Sopore who worked in telecom sector. Solidarity was expressed with the bereaved families.
