Ashwani expresses concern over increasing numbers of cancer patients in Leh


Leh, May 28 (Scoop News)- A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment & Forests GoI comprising of several MPs cutting across party lines have come from Delhi to Leh in order to access the various issues and to review the status of the environment in this part of our country. Today headed by its chairman Ashwani Kumar and other members including Ronald Sapa Talu, Shri, Bhupinder Singh, Smt. Bimla Kashyap Sood, Paul Manoj Pandian, C.P Narayanan and M.K Khan Joint Secretary Rajya Sabha addressed a press conference at Leh and spoke about their purpose of visit in detail. The scientists of Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA ) and district level officers and engineers headed by Deputy Commissioner, Leh Saugat Biswas were also present in the press conference. s
The chairman Ashwani Kumar in his statement stated that during the deliberations we have engaged with a number of representatives from the civil society organizations and NGOs in Leh and many issues were discussed like need to make the presence of army personal here as an instrument for environment protection rather than polluting the region and said that suggestion to involve army as a stakeholder in protecting the fragile environment of Ladakh is well acknowledged by the committee and in this regard Deputy Commissioner, Leh and other senior officers representing state govt were directed to take up the matter with army authorities.
Ashwani further stated that the committee has taken an important decision to constitute a committee consisting of representatives of civil organization and NGOs under the chairmanship of DC, Leh so that the civil society organizations has a say on the matter relating to environmental issues adding that this committee will sit together at least once in a month. Expressing great concern over increasing numbers of cancer patients in Leh, he said that we are going to ask the TATA Medical Centre in Bombay and Indian Medical Research New Delhi to actively cooperate with J&K Govt and Leh administration to find out what can be done to prevent deadliest disease like cancer in Leh.
Taking about the preservation and protection of rich traditional culture of Ladakh Ashwani stressed upon ecotourism and the need of balance between nature, harmony and ecology of this region. The impact of tourism on agriculture, livestock, availability of water and impact on the traditional way of living of shepherds and nomads have also come up for consideration. added Ashwani.


Ashwani further said that there is a large reservoir of plants with medicinal and aromatic values in the mountains of Ladakh which is needed to be commercialized so that people of this region can derive large amount of income from this natural resources at the same time unique biodiversity of Leh and Ladakh has to be preserved in a manner that the ecology is not effected and the people of Ladakh can obtain best possible prices from these traditional resources.
The effect of climate change was a very important issue which came up during the deliberations like receding of glaciers, flash floods, soil erosion, the attack of Locust, drying up of lakes, rise of temperature in water bodies, this have huge consequences for the ecology and economy of Ladakh. Said Ashwani, and ensured that the GoI at the centre level, state govt and local administration will sit together and will take serious measures to find solution to minimise the effect of climate change in Ladakh region.
Mentioning about the meeting of Parliamentary Standing Committee with Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA ) this morning, Ashwani Kumar informs that about ground-based 2-m class, state-of-the-art National Large Solar Telescope (NLST) worth 400 crore will be installed in Ladakh and termed this endeavour of GoI to put Ladakh on global map beside another long term project worth 600 crore ‘National Large Optical Telescope’ with 8-10 diameter at world best solar observer Hanley to be installed by the end of 2022.

Responding to query about receding glacier in Ladakh the Chairman admitted that there are no concrete plan to save the glaciers in Ladakh which is the main source of water reservoir however he added that global warming is a serious issue world is facing and plan needs to be formulated to study the cause.
