De-addiction awareness programme held

Srinagar, July 27 (Scoop News)-An awareness programme was held at Saint Paul’s International Academy School, Sonwar Srinagar, by a team from Drug De-addiction Centre, PCR comprising of Medical Officer, Counsellors and Social Worker. The aim was to create awareness among the students regarding the drug addiction and to convey that drug addiction is a disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and needs to be treated as early as possible.
The programme was followed by an interactive session. The students asked various questions. They wanted to know as to what type of drugs are mainly abused, their ill effects, signs & symptoms & how can we motivate somebody who is abusing drugs to quit.
The Police Drug De-addiction Center team addressed the issues & stigma attached to drug addiction & how to help the person who are involved in addiction.
The medical officer Dr Shabir-ul-Rehman elaborated the medical ill effects of substance abuse and its medical management.
The team of Counsellors which included Mr. Zahid Jeelani and Ms Iram Wani elaborated the Psychological factors that are leading to substance abuse. They also elaborated on the role of counselling and motivational intervening. They emphasized to the students about how drug addiction can be handled and how to reach to Police Drug De-addiction Services.
Students were encouraged to call on help line number 0194-2450451 which is 24X7 service. Where a qualified counsellor is available to address the issues.
The Social Worker Mr Manzoor Ahmad elaborated on the role of families, role of society and religious leaders in controlling drug addiction and also elaborated on early identification of drug abuse and its treatment.
The Programme was highly appreciated by the Principal of Saint Paul’s International Academy School Mrs Grace Paljor, who requested for further awareness programmes to be held at the school.
These School Mental Health Programmes is an initiative of Drug de-addiction Services and Stress Management Helpline, PCR, Kashmir to prevent youngsters from drug addiction. Last year Police Drug De-addiction Centre conducted 40 School Mental Health Programmes across Kashmir valley....
