Peaceful shutdown in Jammu on 3rd day on AIIMS issue | Congress leaders detained for defying Sec 144 |
Jammu, August 2, (Scoop News)-Jammu and its peripheries on Sunday continued to observe a total shutdown on the third consecutive day over the AIIMS issue and the situation remained peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from any place of the region.
The 72 hour long shutdown call was given by the Coordination Committee on AIIMS (ACC), a conglomeration of nearly 80 groups including traders and transporters and is spearheading the current agitation accused ruling coalition partner Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in the Himalayan state for misleading the people of Jammu and not obtaining AIIMS sanctioned notwithstanding the written commitment made by Deputy Chief Minister, Nirmal Singh and his party colleagues over a month and half ago.
All business establishments remained closed and the public transport was off the road causing great inconvenience to commuters especially pilgrims. The roads leading to busy Sunday markets wore a deserted look, however, police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in strength at all vulnerable areas to prevent any untoward incident.
Some Congress leaders including former health minister were detained this morning when they tried to stage a protest march against ruling BJP defying the section 144 imposing restrictions on the group movement. The district administration on Saturday evening imposed restriction orders in view of worsening law and order situation.
The ACC had earlier flatly rejected the Union Government's offer of having AIIMS "like facilities" in both the regions instead of its demand of having a full fledged institution ... |
