"Chances of finding any survivors are now very remote", a defence official
" We salute soldiers who braved all challenges to guard our frontiers and made ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty", Gen. Hooda


Partapur-(Siachen base), February 4, (Scoop News)_ Rescue operations by specialized teams of the Army and the Air Force Thursday continued on second day, a senior defence official told Scoop News.

"Specialised equipment was flown in to Leh today morning to further boost the rescue efforts. The glaciated area presents temperatures ranging from a minimum of minus 42 degrees in the night to maximum of minus 25 degrees during the day", the official said.

He said rescue teams were braving adverse weather and effects of rarified atmosphere to locate and rescue survivors.

However, the official lamented, "it is with deepest of regrets that we have to state that chances of finding any survivors are now very remote".

Lt Gen DS Hooda, Army Commander, Northern Command has expressed his grief on the tragic incident. He said, “It is a tragic event and we salute the soldiers who braved all challenges to guard our frontiers and made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty”.

Ten soldiers of an army post located at an altitude of 19,600 feet were hit by a massive avalanche in the wee hours of Wednesday (Feb 3).

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Governor, N. N. Vohra, has expressed shock and grief over the tragic loss of Army personnel deployed in an Army Post in Northern Siachen Glacier who were buried under a snow wall which collapsed over the post.

The Governor spoke to Lt. Gen. D.S Hooda, Northern Army Commander, today to convey his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families over this tragic loss. The Governor lauded the brave officers and men of the Indian Army who serve in the most difficult areas, brave all odds and even give away their lives for safeguarding national security.
