Local porters' exemplary work at Siachen need due recognition:EC Tourism

Leh,February 10 (Scoop News)-Executive Councillor Tourism LAHDC Leh Tsering Sandup, Councillor Hunder Constituency Nubra, Kunzang Lotos, and Councillor Tegar Constituency, Nubra Rigzin Lundup in a letter to the Defense Minister GoI, Manohar Parikar, said that, we the councillors of Nubra valley of Leh-Ladakh would like to divert your kind attention towards the tragic incident that took place in the Northern Siachen Glacier on 3rd of February 2016.

As your good-self is very much aware that on 3rd of February 2016 a deadly avalanche swept away an Army post in the Northern Siachen Glacier in Ladakh region killing 9 Army personnel including a JCO and by god's grace Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad was rescued alive after being trapped for 6 days in a massive avalanche.

It is pertinent to mention here that during the recent rescue operation, from the beginning i.e. from 3rd of Feb. 2016; other than the army, around 50 local porters at Siachen Glacier played a big role in finding the army personnel buried under the avalanche.
Whenever any such tragic events occur, the porters of Siachen Glacier voluntarily offer their service without giving second thoughts about their own lives, but every time their services are left unseen and the credits are bestowed to the army alone.

The porters at Siachen Glacier have been serving in this adverse weather condition and extremely freezing temperature since 1984 and they have always contributed their noble services in such incidents and infact have played the main role in most of the cases but every time they do not get their due credit, or any appreciation or any other felicitation whatever is due, and with the result they get demoralized and get reluctant to do such daring acts in future.

In the past also, there were many instances that many army personnel fell in crevasses and were rescued by the local porters only. As such we would like to represent their case and request your Hon'ble to kindly help these porters to get their due share of credit. They may be given the due acknowledgment for their noble but daring work in the service of nation, so that they may also feel encouraged and not feel neglected for their good and exemplary work.
