Angry Kargilites demand prompt action against land Mafia
resent unabated encroachment of River Suru banks

Kargil, February 10, (Scoop News)-Expressing deep resentment against the district authorities for allowing unabated encroachment of land along the banks of River Suru here, people of the town have approached the state and the Central officials for swift action against the perpetrators.

“Despite our repeated pleas, the district administration has been allowing unabated encroachment of government land in the town particularly along the banks of River Suru and also permitting construction of superstructures, hotels and private houses near head work of Iqbal Hydel Project”, alleged Mohd Mussa, a religious and social activist.

Untreated effluents from these commercial complexes goes into the river straightway as no provision for its treatment has been made thus polluting the river waters, he fumed.

“Surprisingly, the natural course of the river too has been diverted due to construction of retaining wall within the river bed for which official funds were used. It is likely to pose a great environmental threat to the local population particularly during rainy season”, Mussa argued.

Over 20 kanals of land from the river bed has been raised and converted into land mass for construction of the bus stand, he alleged and said the construction of the bus stand has no mention in the official revenue records.

Appealing the authorities to prevent impending disasters, Mussa sought a timely intervention by them in saving the area from causing further damage to flora and fauna of the area.

He also demanded a physical inspection by an official team to probe into the misuse of public land and funds.

Kargil (8500 feet high) is a major historical and border town on Srinagar- Leh- Zanskar roads with a population of over 145,000 souls in entire district.
