Gen Hooda dismisses Pak diplomat’s proposal
‘a tragic incident can’t be linked with withdrawal’

Udhampur, February 12, (Scoop News)-An Indian army general on Friday explained that Pakistan’s suggestion for demilitarization of world’s highest battle field, Siachen, can be accepted only when that country addresses to some of our (India’s) basic concerns which are not well disposed to them.

His comments came in retort to a proposal by Delhi based Pakistan’s top diplomat, Abdul Basit, on Thursday for resolution of Siachen imbroglio by mutual withdrawal of troops following recent avalanche that hit a camp in which 10 soldiers lost their lives.

Basit had said, “These tragedies shore up the urgency to resolve the matter (withdrawal of troops from the glacier) through a peaceful dialogue”.

“We have repeatedly made it clear that our ground position on the glacier has to be authenticated meaning where we are today and where our posts are has to be accepted by them (Pakistan)”, General Officer Commanding in Chief (GoC in C) of Northern Command, Lt Gen DS Hooda, told reporters on the sidelines of an investiture ceremony held at the Command Headquarters.

“Our legitimate concerns have to be addressed and our genuine fears are to be dispelled before withdrawal can be talked about and we know some of these conditions are not acceptable to the other country and therefore consensus on the subject could not be arrived at”, he elaborated.

“We had a tragic incident on the glacier and I see no reason at all to connect this to any withdrawal from the glacier”, he said adding “we are committed to defend our borders and will continue to do so and there is no difference in our stand between army and the government on this issue”.

“It is surprising and unwarranted”, Gen Hooda asserted.
