AG and dozens of LO’s relinquish their jobs, submit resignations | New AG likely to be designated | Jammu, February 13, (Scoop News)-Adhering to Governor, NN Vohra’s direction, Jammu and Kashmir Advocate General (AG), Jehangir Iqbal Ganai, along with dozens of other law officers (LO) tendered their resignations from their posts on Friday.
The instructions were passed on by Vohra when he was in Delhi attending there two day Governors Conference.
Raj Bhavan on Thursday had asked the AG and other Law Officers to demit their posts following the reports that entire team of 45 law officers, with a few exceptions, were not filing their Income Tax returns.
Iqbal was appointed as AG by the former coalition government of PDP-BJP led by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed on June 23 last year. However, after Sayeed’s sudden demise on January 7, Governor’s rule was imposed in the state.
“I was asked to continue but I declined the offer”, Iqbal told media persons adding “if there is no trust in AG, there is no fun in continuing and holding the post”.
Sources in the secretariat revealed that chief secretary, BR Sharma, would submit the resignations of AG and other LO’s to the Governor on Saturday who will take a final call on the issue. The government is likely to appoint a new AG in the aftermath of Iqbal’s turning down the offer.
Incidentally, the law officers continued to hold on to their jobs although propriety demanded that all the posts filled through political appointments ought to have demitted their posts of their own soon after the Governor’s rule came into force in the state.
