Women constables of ITBP force being deployed along LoAC next week after completing acclimatization process

Leh (Ladakh), May 24, (Scoop News)-A dozen of female constables of Indo-Tibetian Border Police Force (ITBPF) arrived here to protect the high altitude borders along Indo China and will be taking over their positions from next week after spending their mandatory period as part of acclimatization process.

“They are part of specialized contingent of 500 female constables selected from various parts of the country who had been specifically trained for the purpose”, said an ITBP official, who is not authorized to divulge details to media.

ITBP has already over 1,600 women in its nearly 60,000 personnel and had declared some time back that one third of its total personnel deployed along border will be women.

These women constables will be performing their duties at forward posts which are above 4000 meters and have adverse climatic conditions. The force has for the first time decided to deploy women in combat duties at its high altitude posts.

Earlier, ITBP women constables were posted at Nathu La in Sikkim for facilitating trade and frisking women but this will be for the first time that they will be deployed for guarding our borders at these heights.

“These women constables have gone through an exacting training to be able to perform their duties as trained fighters at par with their male counterparts,” he said adding, “the selection criteria is the same as of the male personnel, except the relaxation of height.”

ITBP is a specialized mountain force and most of its men are professionally trained mountaineers and skiers, the official added.

The force was raised on October 24, 1962 as sentinels from Karakoram mountain range in Ladakh to Jachep in Arunachal Pradesh covering 3488 km Indo-China border and manning border outposts on altitudes from 9000 feet to over 18,500 feet in the western, middle and eastern sectors of Line of Actual Control (LoAC).
