Kashmiris are still being fooled in name of religion

By Dr Shabir Choudhry

Ghazwa was a war in which the holy Prophet himself took part. He is no longer with us in a physical form. Then questions arises why some Pakistani Muslims are propagating that there will be a final war, known as ‘Ghazwa e Hind’ in which Muslims will prevail and they will march towards the holy land in Hijaz?

These propagandists also claim that these warriors will wear black turbans; and those taking part in Ghazwa e Hind will find a place in Heaven, of course, among other rewards they will get 72 most beautiful women of the Heaven.

Credit must be given to Pakistani policy makers for successfully fooling us people of Jammu and Kashmir, and people of Pakistan for so long in name of religion. However, people need to understand that they won’t be granted Heaven for killing innocent people. They won’t be granted Heaven for promoting religious intolerance and hatred. God is not God of Muslims. He is God of all. Islam says if you kill one innocent person that is if you have killed the entire humanity.

Pakistan had no legal standi in the Kashmir dispute, yet because of their shrewd manoeuvring, and use of religion to advance their agenda on Kashmir they managed to become a party to the dispute.

After their violation of the Standstill Agreement on 22 October 1947, and subsequent accession that was provisionally accepted by India, the issue was between India and the people of Jammu and Kashmir State; because Pakistan accepted that the Rulers of the Princely States had a right to decided future of their States.

The people of Jammu and Kashmir State had three choices, namely accept the provisional accession, reject it or renegotiate terms of that provisional accession.

The Pakistani policy makers not only made Pakistan a stake holder in the Kashmir dispute, they have also very cleverly made China a stakeholder. One cannot envisage any solution of Jammu and Kashmir without some role of China.

No matter what Sushma Swaraj says on the issue of Kashmir, the bitter fact is Pakistan calls all the shots in Kashmir, and India only reacts. It is sad to note that time and again they react foolishly which result in human rights abuses and disrupt the everyday life, especially in the Valley of Kashmir. In the eyes of the ordinary masses, India appears as a ‘villain’ and Pakistan as a ‘hero’ championing their cause of Kashmir.

Ordinary people of Jammu and Kashmir are not political or defence analysts. Little they know that Pakistan is settling their score against India by keeping India engaged in Kashmir. They don’t know that Pakistan has a major role in the suffering of the Kashmiris. It was action of Pakistan which resulted in the forced division of our motherland and loss of tens of thousands of lives and dishonouring of Kashmiri women.

Each time Pakistani agencies or their proxies set up a trap, in which India without any hesitation jumps in; and ensuing suffering and human rights abuses add to the bitterness of the people. And each time India says, we know Pakistan is behind this. We let you off this time, but dare you do it again.

While this squabbling continues, another trap is set up, and without learning anything from the past, Indians jump in to it again, causing death and destruction; and the tragic cycle of violence, death and destruction continues.

We people of Jammu and Kashmir State continue to suffer, and continue to bleed. However, bitter fact is that we also don’t learn from our mistakes. Like Indians, we also happily jump in to the Pakistani trap and suffer. We like to be fooled in name of religion. We like to give conflicting messages.

Why can’t we give this message that the Kashmir dispute is not religious in nature? It is a political dispute which requires a political solution. It is not a problem of Muslims of the Valley. If you continue to give this message that it is a problem of Muslims of the Valley, and your ‘leadership’ will continue to dance on the tune played by Islamabad, trust me you will never get the support which you want.

As I pointed out earlier, India has no policy on Kashmir; and they also give conflicting statements on Kashmir. On one hand India claims that the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir belongs to India; on the other hand they have no policy on areas of Kashmir under control of Pakistan. Indian policy is to maintain the status quo; and get recognition from Pakistan that Kashmir, Ladakh and Jammu are legally parts of India.

In response to the statement of Nawaz Sharif that soon Kashmir will be part of Pakistan, Foreign Minister of India, Sushma Swaraj retorted that its (Pakistan’s) stated goal of detaching Kashmir from India will "not be realised to the end of eternity."

So one can see the entire emphasis of India is to maintain what India has; and not to get the remaining areas of Jammu and Kashmir which were legally part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir at the time of the provisional accession. We people of Jammu and Kashmir don’t want division of our motherland. We want the former State to unite that, we as a nation, can determine our future.

India must understand that the provisional accession was for the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir; and if you negate that, then the provisional accession becomes null and void.

My message to the people of former State of Jammu and Kashmir is that our struggle must be for the unification and independence. Our struggle must be for all the citizens of the State. We must oppose the status quo, and must oppose policies of all the countries which occupy us; and MUST NOT become foreign policy tool of one occupier, as that is detrimental to our struggle.
