Lack of ICU beds killing patients: DAK | | Srinagar, July 26(Scoop News)-Amid growing trauma due to civil unrest, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today said that shortage of intensive care unit (ICU) beds in Kashmir hospitals is killing critically injured patients. How fast intensive care is given to trauma patients determines whether they survive or not. We see patients dying and there is nothing we can do about it. Lack of ICU beds is turning into nightmare with critically ill patients forced to shift to trolley beds or general wards. Patients’ succumbing to easily preventable deaths is so sickening that one is left scratching the head for answers. It beats logic that for a population of seven million there are only 32 ICU beds. This is far from recommended as 20% of the total beds should be ICU beds and more for overflow besides hospitals should have dedicated ICU’s for disasters. We find hospitals struggling to cope in times of mass causalities due to lack of immediate access to critical care beds. We have fewest intensive care beds putting sick and wounded at serious risk. Majority of vulnerable patients who need monitoring in ICU after operation die for want of critical care. Even major operations like cancer and cardiac surgeries are put off due to non-availability of postoperative beds. The most important place for an elderly with pneumonia, or a stroke is the ICU- but they are put in general wards, costing their lives. ... |
