JK CM condoles Shafi Qureshi’s demise
Jammu, August 28 (Scoop News)- Chief Minister, Ms Mehbooba Mufti has condoled the demise of veteran Congress leader and former Minister, Mohammad Shafi Qureshi, who passed away in New Delhi today.


The Chief Minister in her condolence message while expressing sympathies with the bereaved family prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
She said during his extended political career spanning over several decades, Mohammad Shafi Qureshi has held key positions at various constitutional, political and administrative levels in the country and has contributed a lot in various spheres during this period.



Veteran Congress leader Mohd Shafi Qureshi passed away after long illness at his residence in Delhi today.
Mr Qureshi was 89 and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
He was not keeping good health for the last several months due to chest congestion and was almost bed ridden. He breathed his last at his Tara Apartment residence, Kalkaji, Okhla road, New Delhi. The burial will took place in the Union capital on Monday morning.

Mohammad Shafi Qureshi was born on 24.11.1929 in Srinagar (J&K), Mr. Qureshi graduated from Sri Amar Singh College, Srinagar. He obtained MA and LLB degrees from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).


He was awarded distinguished merit certificate in the college. He was Member of Students Cabinet in AMU in 1952-54 and Secretary, Law Society AMU in 1953. He was Vice President of the Geographical Society of AMU in 1954.

Mr. Qureshi formed the Congress in Kashmir and became the founder President of J&K National Congress. He was elected to Lok Sabha from Anantnag Constituency in the General Elections in 1971 and 1977. He held arious Ministerial positions in the Union Government during 1966-1979.

He was Governor of several major States like Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh during 1991 to 1996. He has visited many foreign Countries like Japan, Australia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Libya, Bahrain, Iraq, UAE, China, Iran etc. He also visited Mauritius in December, 1991 as Leader of Indian Delegation to the World Urdu Conference.


Meanwhile,Governor N N Vohra has condoled the demise of veteran Congress leader Mr Qureshi. In his condolence message, Mr Vohra conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for the peace to the departed soul.

Leader of Opposition in Raja Sabha and former Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has expressed his grief and sorrow on the sad demise of veteran party leader Mohd Shafi Qureshi. Mr Azad described him as torch bearer of Congress ideology and secular Parliamentarian. Azad said Mr Qureshi was public friendly and upright gentleman.
Mr Azad expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for peace of the departed soul.
Several senior PCC leaders including PCC chief G A Mir, Peerzada Mohd Sayeed, Sham Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla, Mula Ram, Mohd Sharief Niaz, R S Chib, Jugal Kishore Sharma, Taj Mohiuddin, Ravinder Sharma, Dr Manohar Lal, Yogesh Sawney, Ashok Sharma, Ghulam Nabi Monga, Muzaffar Parray, Anil Chopra, Manmohan Singh and others condoled the death of veteran Congress leader and conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved family.
