17 killed and 38 injured when a bus veers off a mountainous road in Jammu: Police

Reasi, October 20, (Scoop News)-At least 17 people are feared dead and 38 others injured when an overcrowded passenger bus veered off near a bend on a narrow mountainous road in Jammu and Kashmir, an official source said on Thursday.

According to police, the ill fated bus was on its way to Bakkal from Reasi when it skidded of the road near Jyotipuram and rolled down nearly 15o metres down into the gorge, killing 17 people besides injuring 38 others.

Jyotipuram is nearly 14 km northwest of Reassi, the district headquarters.

“The accident happened between 3 and 3.30 pm,” police said.

Senior police and civil officials rushed to the spot to supervise the rescue operations.

Most of the injured were immediately shifted to district hospital for treatment. Some of the critically wounded were being shifted to Jammu Medical College and Hospital for specialized treatment, the police said.

Eyewitness said the bus was carrying over 60 passengers when its driver lost the control of the vehicle near a bend and rolled down into a gorge. Volunteers were seen climbing a steep track carrying dead bodies and injured up to road where from they were being ferried to the nearest hospital, they said.
