| Leh- Manali railway line to be taken up in first phase | | Railway officials discuss issue with LAHDC , seek land for its camp office | 
Leh (Ladakh), December 3, (Scoop News)-The Central Government has accelerated the laying down of strategically important 498 km, Bilaspur- Manali- Leh rail project by including it in the border areas projects for which Final Location Survey (FLS) has been embarked on at a cost of rupees 375 crore and is expected to be taken up in the first phase.
In a written reply to a question on rail connectivity in border areas, Union minister of state for Railways, Rajen Gohin, told parliament the other day that the ministry of defence had initiated rail line projects along China, Nepal and Pakistan borders as strategic lines. He said a total of 14 strategic lines have been identified, out of which four Bilaspur- Manali- Leh (498km); Pasighat- Tezu- Rupai (227km); Missamai- Tanga- Twang (378km) and North Lakhimpur- Bame- Silapathar (249km) will be taken up in first phase.
Gohin said the stability, geology, fabrication, upkeep and safety issues need to be appraised for these projects. The first line is along Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and last three lines are along Assam- Arunachal Pradesh border.
Incidentally, a team of senior Railway officials had visited Leh in September this year to discuss short term and long term plans to provide rail connectivity to the Himalayan region.
To expedite the work and conduct survey before the laying of rail line, the officials had petitioned Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) to provide sufficient land for setting up of a camp office and required infrastructure.... |
