Gandhi Global Family celebrates Martin Luther King Day with students in J&K
Jammu, January 16, (Scoop News)- Gandhi Global Family, United Nations DPI affiliated Peace NGO, in collaboration with Gandhi Peace Foundation Jammu and Gandhi Study Center, MAM College Jammu, under the aegis of the United Nations Information Centre New Delhi, remembered late Martin Luther King Jr on his 88th birthday here today. The event was presided over by Dr Ramesh Chander Principal MAM College Jammu. In his welcome address, he mentioned that the day is celebrated to promote equality and social justice globally.

Eminent Gandhian Padmashri S P Varma, President Gandhi Global Family J&K underlined the importance of adopting the teachings of peace heros like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King & Nelson Mandela. He highlighted that its no big secret that King Jr & Madiba took great inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi in pushing forward the civil rights movement in their respective countries.Today, as culturally diversed society, the importance of their teachings increases a many fold. He further encouraged youth to adopt the ideologies towards enhancing positive social change.

Coordinator Gandhi Peace Foundation, Jammu Chapter Dr Seema Rohmetra stressed upon the need to adopt the philosophies of peace and non violence advocated by great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and King Martin Luther to resolve conflicts at different levels. She also referred to the great works of Mahatma Gandhi like ' Hind Swaraj' and King Martin Luther's king's essay 'Pilgrimage to Nonviolence' which should be introduced to the youth as the channels to introduce peace vocabulary to the youth who can make difference in building sustainable societies.

Mr Manish Joshi, GGF Youth Coordinator, underlined that the life of Martin Luther King teaches us how to stand up against injustice and not to deviate from the path of peace & non-violence. He mentioned King Jr as a role model for today's youth.

Mr Krishan Singh, Ex Director Finance, Higher Education J&K, stressed upon the need of following noble teachings of Martin Luther King that bonded the society into brotherhood, peace and solidarity.

On the occasion, Sahil Sambyal and Ajaz Shah, both students of MAM College, also expressed their views. Others present were Prof Sangita Sudan, Prof Savita Jamwal, Prof Sudesh Kumar, Prof Roshan Lal, Prof Mona Seth, Mrs Vimla Salathia, Ms Sarika Mahajan,Mohd Rayeez & Vishav Pratap Singh.
