Protesting students demand University semester exams on time,
fear losing an academic year due to turmoil in Kashmir last year, seek political help

Leh (Ladakh), March, (Scoop News)-Threatening to intensify their agitation in case the government failed to address their grievance and resolve their issue at the earliest, scores of students of Government Degree College (GDC) held a protest demonstration against the authorities of University of Kashmir for not conducting examination of various classes as per the schedule.

Due to street turbulence in Kashmir last year, the University examinations could not be held in the month of August but when the situation improved in November, the first semester examination was held in Kashmir but not in Ladakh region.

The students in Ladakh region were then assured that their examination will be held in the first week of March but the same had not been held so far.

The protesting students, carrying placards blocked the vehicular traffic in the town, accused University authorities of discrimination against them.

They alleged that Kashmir University has failed to conduct test of any semester since their enrolment in the college in April last year resulting in one complete year loss of an academic session.

They demanded that they be put under University of Jammu instead of Kashmir University. The students alleged the University authorities were playing with their future and claimed that it should have been their third semester by this time.

The agitating students sought the intervention of political leadership including the chief minister, who is, incidentally, the Pro Chancellor of the Universities in the state, to resolve their problem at the earliest.

“Kashmir University’s failure to hold semester examination on time has made us to complete one class in two years. Due to problems therein Khachul (Kashmir) not a single examination has been held here by the University authorities till date,” said Tsering Matop, a student of GDC....
