Entry inevitable of ‘tallest’ Ice Stupa in Guinness Book of World Records
surpasses previous record by over 25 feet



Leh (Ladakh), March 26, (Scoop News)-Sonam Wangchuk, Rolex Award winner for his unique innovation of artificial ice stupa (ice pyramid) for conservation of water during winter and use it for irrigation during early spring is expected to enter Guinness Book of World Records.


78.4 feet tall ice stupa was measured by Superintending Engineer Public Works Department (PWD), Tashi Chombel and Engineer Nazir in presence of two independent witnesses Colonel Sanjay Ghosh, a civil engineer in army and inspector district police Leh, Tsewang Dorjey, broke earlier record of 53 feet high manmade ice sculptor built in Harbin China.


Our ice stupa’s height is making a new history in the Guinness Book of World Record, the award winning innovator said.


Preparing of ice stupa is aimed to find an alternative to overcome water scarcity for irrigation and cultivation of agricultural land during early spring season when water from the natural glaciers is insufficient.


In an informal interaction with media persons, Wangchuk said it took two months for 14 volunteers including one each from USA and Chennai for formation of inverse ice cone. He said there is overflow of water from different valleys of the region during winter months and the aim of this innovation is to conserve water for the purpose.


The water to be obtained from this (ice stupa) source for irrigation purpose will last till mid July this year will be stored in a tank, from there it will be distributed to large swathes of land bereft of water.


Besides ending water scarcity during cultivation season, the ice stupa can also prove to be an attraction for tourists visiting the region during winter months, Wangchuk said. He also referred to other project ‘Alternate University’ a way out to real predicament of local people living in the high altitude areas.


A large gathering had assembled near the site that included Rev Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche, Dr Ulrike Scharf of Germany, Bavarian state minister for Environment and Consumer Protection and chief executive councilor (CEC) of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Dr Sonam Dawa besides others.
