Workshop on ‘Early Childhood Development, Orientation to Life Skills and Teaching Aids’ organized at JU



Jammu, May 28, (Scoop News)- Post Graduate Department of Home Science (Human Development), University of Jammu which is a pioneer in Early child hood development research in collaboration with “CARE North” a Centre for “counseling assessment Research and empowerment “conducted an activity based one day workshop on ‘Early childhood development, orientation to life skills and teaching Aids’ for the budding enthusiastic of various prestigious schools of the state. The HOD Home Science department, Prof Neeru Sharma and Director “CARE North” Dr Chand Trehan emphasized that unless the foundation of the child is focused upon, the youth would not be stable and have a holistic personality. Incidentally this is the third successful skill building workshop of “CARE North” in the state.
In his inaugural address, Prof Desh Bandhu ,Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu and Chief Guest of the workshop said that such skill based workshops are essential for the state and the teaching faculty who are the actual shapers of the children of the state.

The Guest of Honour, Prof Neeru Sharma, HOD,Department of Home Science, University of Jammu encouraged the participants and applauded the efforts of CARE North for the mission of skill building amongst the professionals. Highlighting the objectives of the workshop, she deliberated on the need of sensitizing teachers and parents to the development in the early childhood years.

Dr Sarika Manhas, Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science took the first technical session on ‘Developmental Milestones in the Early childhood years’. She elaborated on the developmental milestones and tasks the children need to accomplish as they grow from early childhood years to middle childhood. A conducive environment has to be provided in the schools so that they can achieve these well within the required time frame. Teachers can design activities and curriculum in such a manner that they assist in promoting children’s holistic development.

Dr Chand Trehan, a Psychologist & Counselor of J&K state with a vast experience in the psychological field and winner of numerous awards at state and national level and also Director of CARE North ( Centre of Counseling , Assessment ,Research and Empowerment) informed the Guest and participants during her technical session on Orientation to “Life skills” , that the need of the hour in the state of J&K, is to create awareness amongst professionals, teachers, parents and public about the importance of life skills . She further emphasized unless the Teachers and adults are not aware of the milestones of Early child hood development-the foundation of a personality ,they cannot groom a holistic personality.

The third technical session of the workshop was conducted by Dr. Samridhi Arora, Associate Professor, Department of Home Science along with the Research Scholars . The session focused on providing the participants with skills of preparing teaching aids for usage among young children. She elaborated on the advantages of using aids to help make the curriculum interesting and enriched.

The workshop enhanced the skills of the participants whose learning till date was only knowledge based. The workshop also gave a platform to many young professionals to showcase their talent and expertise. The participants really enjoyed the activity based sessions and created many innovative teaching aids. On the whole the workshop was a holistic teaching learning experience and the 62 participants were given certificates during the valedictory function by the chief guest Sardar Ravinder Singh, Director School Education Jammu _who applauded the efforts of Home Science department and CARE North. He also appreciated the contribution of such skill based workshops in the field of Education and encouraged the teachers to come forward and be true mentors of the children.
