Kashmir – Caught in the extremes

By B L Saraf

Kashmir problem has internal and external dimensions . Extreme positions held by the contending parties have aborted every effort initiated to address the external aspect. Even the local angle defies a solution , thanks to the extreme positions taken by persons within the country . On one side is a group lead by the ‘ liberal ‘ likes of Mani Shankar Iyer and the opposite one is headed by the ‘nationalist’ T V Anchors and their assorted panelists - with opportunist fence- sitters shifting sides conveniently.

We grant it that both are on same page when it comes to the state’s relation with India , and are well intentioned to see a resolution of the festering problem . But that needs to be demonstrated. At times it looks they are in slanging match with each other , with one group trying to drown voice of the other , caring a fig for the cause they intend to espouse . They end up in their ‘ ghettoized ‘ thought and word . One must understand that as it is for an ordinary object so is for a political issue that a hard and unifocal view does no justice to its over-all features . A broader look is always desirable . Extreme position held on a issue tells up on one’s political imagination . Bereft of imagination , no matter how well meaning and sincere he may be , one will never succeed in his mission .

HM Rajnath Singh said “ Kashmir is ours ; Kahmiris are ours .” In fitness of things he ought have emphasized , first , the owner ship of people and then the territory. Anyway the statement would make a sense if his government makes a sincere effort to talk to the youth of the Valley who are on the streets . Raj nath and the ‘ nationalist must know that a cool ( politically ) Kashmir is in the larger interests of India . So , it their primary duty to ensure peace and calm . It makes a pathetic picture to see young boys and girls on the streets with stones in hands . Indifference doesn’t work in the political matters.

Kashmir is not what it was three years ago. Challenges have multiplied , partly due to the happenings in Arab world and partly on account of over- exuberant display of ‘ nationalism ‘ in the mainland . For PM Modi it is all the more important to have peace in Kashmir , because BJP Is ruling the state in association with PDP . His development agenda can work only in peaceful conditions. For CM Mehboba Mufti stakes are high. She must not allow her developmental plans fall hostage to the uncertainties in Kashmir . PDP and BJP must dispel the impression that they are cutting at each other on mere posting and placement of few chosen bureaucrats.

Major Gogoi has been honored for saving precious lives . Farooq Ahmad Dar is also Kashmiri Home Minister claiming his own . He is feeling hurt . One has to show regard for his human rights also . As our own , it is on us to assuage his injured feelings and do something , in tangible terms , to restore his ‘dented ‘ human dignity .
Dear Liberals and the concerned citizens , please keep on fighting for the cause of young Kashmiris. But care to tell them to be in schools to hone the educational skills , much needed to fight for real justice and not waste precious time on the streets . Please show some concern for those young Pandit employees ,also , who were made to flee Kashmir , second time , in last two decades . And when you interact with the separatists leaders do have regard for your liberal and secular credentials , and tell them to distinguish their struggle from the sectarian surge we see in the Valley . The citizenship demands to question views of some of the Hurriayat leaders on the return and rehabilitation of the Pandits in the Valley .

The liberal and the true nationalist politics must , in unison , move forward towards the reality of shared spaces rather than focus on extreme positions . For addressing local dimension of the vexed ‘K’ problem they must give up their preconceived notions , make an endeavor to carry every section of Indian society along with and impress upon them that a peaceful and tranquil Kashmir is in the interest of India , as much it is for the whole J&K . Kashmiris are over stretched . They need real and durable relief.
