Prabhu lays foundation stone for Rs 157 crore of ‘final location survey’ of 498 km long Leh- Bilaspur broad gauge rail line
likely to be completed by 2019.




Leh(Ladakh), June 26, (Scoop News)-Union Railway Minister, Suresh Prabhu, Monday set in motion rupees 157 crore worth ‘final location survey’ of 498 kilometre long new broad gauge rail line between Leh-Bilaspur by laying foundation stone in Leh.


Minister for cooperative and Ladakh Affairs, Chering Dorjay, Thupstan Chhewang, Member of Parliament, Rigzin Jora, a local lawmaker in the state legislature and Dr Sonam Dawa Lonpo Chief Executive Councilor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) were also present on the occasion.


The final location survey has been assigned to a public sector undertaking of Railways, RITES, for execution and an expert team has been delegated to carry out the remaining task by 2019.


Considered to be a major stride towards rail connectivity of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, 3,300 metre high strategically vital rail project is expected to become highest rail line in the world.


The proposed rail line will connect all important points between Leh and Bilaspur including Karu, Upshi, Darcha, Koksar, Keylong, Tandi, Manali, Mandi and Sunder Nagar, a survey report said, adding the same will bring both socio and economic prosperity to the people of the region besides trade and tourism.


Ministry of Defence (MoD) had earlier identified fourteen strategic rail lines along the border with China, Nepal and Pakistan of which Leh- Bilaspur; Pasighat- Rupai; Lakhimpur-Silapathar and Missamari- Tawang.


The project is among four important all weather railway connectivity announced earlier by the Union Defence Ministry.


The ministry expects that with the commissioning of the rail line, transportation of its personnel and equipment will be eased. At present the road connectivity between Leh- Srinagar and Leh- Bilaspur is limited to summer month only....
