Kisan Tehreek held daylong convention at Anantnag
Demands waiver on all agricultural loans, implementation of crop insurance scheme

Anantnag, July 19, (Scoop News)-Jammu and Kashmir Kisan Tehreek (JKKT) held one day convention at Dak Banglow Anantnag against the distress of Kisans. Kisans across the valley participated demanding waiver on all agricultural loans including KCC and implementation of crop insurance scheme.

Addressing the convention, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, State President CITU and MLA said that the much publicized schemes like Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana have proved illusory. In the case of Fasal Bima Yojana, the allocation has overwhelmingly gone to pay private insurance companies rather than to benefit farmers. In the case of Sinchai Yojana, the present allocation for irrigation will not even mean Rs 10,000 per hectare of unirrigated land. The real issue which farmers are facing and demanding since long is fair price for their produce by ensuring a minimum support price for all crops to cover the production plus 50 per cent profit. This legitimate demand despite repeated promise/assurances has not been conceded till date.

He stressed that all the kisan unions irrespective of their affiliations must come together for a united struggle to get their legitimate demands viz waiver of loans and minimum support price accepted.

He appealed the peasants/farmers to come out of any illusions and prepare for united struggles.

While addressing the convention, Gh Nabi Malik, General Secretary Kisan Tehreek said that the core sectors of our economy i.e agriculture and horticulture have totally been neglected by the successive governments. Despite the fact that ours is an agricultural state and major chunk of population is dependent on this sector. The state being vulnerable to natural calamities is in dire need of crop insurance schemes to provide respite to the calamity affected kisans, which have not been incorporated sofar. He demanded pension of Rs. 5000/- for the marginalized kisans who have crossed the age of 60 years and are unable to earn livelihood.

Besides waiving off KCC loans, implementation of recommendations of National Commission for Farmers/Crop insurance scheme, he also demanded restoration of subsidies, expansion of public procurement system and creation of calamity funds to assist farmers affected by crop losses.

The convention was also addressed by Ghulam Ahmad Ganie, Mohammad Afzal Parray, Ghulam Rasool and Abdul Rashid.
