Women can strengthen economic status through cooperatives:Speakers



Leh, July 19, (Scoop News)-The members of executive body of women cooperative of SHGs from 8 villages including Chuchot, Pheyang, Kharnakling, Stok, Chuchul, Merak, Perma and Sato formed under project LAKSAL, Looms of Ladakh convened a review meeting under the Chairmanship of DC, Leh Prasanna Ramaswamy G. Others present were Dy Dir Upshi Pashmina Goat Farm Dr. Tundup Namgial, Project Strategy & Brand Development, Project LAKSAL Abhilasha Bahuguna and interns from Institute of Rural Management Anand.

DC in his address urged the executive members to get serious in imbibing as much knowledge and information from the resource persons in enhancing their skills and product quality under the brand name Looms of Ladakh. He emphasised upon the members to focus and understand about the functioning of management to be able to maintain the brand status in terms of quality and marketing by the SHGs independently.

Abhilasha Bahuguna, said that Looms of Ladakh has already been positioned itself as a brand in the mainstream market and informed about designers approaching for tie ups which she said speaks high of the popularity of the brand attained in a short time. Talking about the idea behind initiating this project of skill development Abhilasha said that the main purpose is to improve the socio economic level of nomadic people in Changthang region who are the primary grower of Pashmina. Secondly, the objective is to create a link for Ladakhi Pashmina having local branding in national and international markets considering its finest quality in the world.

Abhilasha said that Looms of Ladakh is an effort to establish a sustainable institute involving groups of women across Leh district. She urged the women groups to broaden their vision and take maximum advantage of the professionals coming from outside to train them. She stressed upon the SHGs to enhance their skills through peer learning, aim to bring leaders among themselves and to maintain a positive attitude to learn from rejections. Abhilasha call for the need to diversify and urged the women group to promote products of sheep, yak and camel wool along with pashmina and to design their products as per the changing trends and requirements.

Suyashi Purwar and Devanshu Dixit interns from IRMA-Anand gave a detailed power point presentation on the work based on project Laksal they carried through their internship period of more than a months’ time to study market mapping and production management. They stressed primarily on the need among women cooperative to generate the sense of ownership among themselves over Looms of Ladakh in order to run this cooperative independently and successfully in future. They came up with few suggestions like starting welfare fund, regular meetings, cash disbursement, design mentorship and SHG formation. They stressed on the need to involve maximum women group including all the villages to expand their business and meet the required demands. They said that the women cooperative needs to fix a target of Rs. 6 lakh income per month or more from their sale to meet their expanses and to ensure market for their products.

The issues of attendance of women members and income distribution were also raised and addressed also during the meeting.
