SHRC asks Govt to ensure payment of minimum wages to employees

Srinagar,July 20, (Scoop News)- State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) today directed the state government to pay minimum wages to all the employees employed by the state government under the Minimum Wages Act.
The directions were passed by the Chairman SHRC Justice (Retd) Bilal Nazki while hearing a case regarding payment of Rs 200 and Rs 500 per month to CPWs engaged by the Education Department.
While passing the order, Chairman observed that prima-facia it appears to be gross violation of human rights as people are engaged by the state without even paying the minimum wages provided under the statue.
Terming the report submitted by Department of Education as alarming, SHRC said that it is a clear violation of constitutional principles of law of the land and directed Commissioner Secretary GAD to furnish the list of all employees engaged with departments in the state who are being paid below the prescribed rate of minimum wages within a period of two months.
