Dr Dawa opens 12 day long ‘Sun and Earth Festival of Ladakh’ at Leh,experts and students from 15 countries participate
DGBR Gen. Shrivastava calls on CEC, LAHDC-Kargil, discuss various construction projects in Kargil district.




Leh /Kargil(Ladakh, July 22, (Scoop News)-Inaugurating 12 day long festival ‘Sun and Earth Festival of Ladakh’, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Leh, Dr Sonam Dawa, said that Ladakh is famous for its rich culture and traditions.


“To see the richness of our culture and tradition lots of tourists are coming here, this festival is an attempt to revive and improve the knowledge of the heritage buildings,” he said, adding that “experts and students from 15 countries are participating in the festival.”


Participants from various countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Algeria, Chile, Iran, Japan and Romania will be working and learning together during the festival. The experts from different countries will be showcasing their expertise of building different structures by using clay, rock, water and sun while others will learn new technologies to construct buildings and surrounding walls.


The festival has been organized by the upcoming Alternative University for Mountain Development through Himalayan Institute of Alternatives at Phayang.

Sonam Wangchuk, the organiser, while welcoming the guests said that the concept of the festival is the blend the traditional with new technology to give the world a new idea to build ‘Earth Buildings’ using earth, water and sun to live peacefully for centuries.


“A concrete building will last between 60 and 100 years whereas earth building survives for centuries,” he said, adding “forts and palaces are testimony to this fact” he said.


Meanwhile, Director General Border Roads (DGBR), Lt General SK Shrivastava arrived in Kargil and inspected ongoing projects of Project ‘Vijayak’ of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) including the works going on Nimo- Padam- Darcha Road in Zanskar.


Gen Shrivastava also called on the CEC- LAHDC (Kargil), Kacho Ahmed Ali Khan and during the meeting, the pace of work on various road connectivity projects taken over by BRO in the border district were discussed.


CEC impressed on to expedite the work on these projects so that people of the region can be relieved of the difficulties of terrain and extreme weather conditions.

Khan also presented a memorandum to DGBR which included the transfer of road stretch from Captain Morh to Zero Point (Zojila Top) of National Highway 1-D from

Project Beacon to Project Vijayak for upgradation, maintenance and snow clearance, over four km long road between Barchay and Lalung in BRD Programme besides Long Term Roll on Works Plan, upgradation and macadamization of Kargi- Batalik Road and construction of a by pass road at Drass town etc.


Assuring the CEC for raising the issues raised by LAHDC on proper platform, Gen Shrivastava informed that to expedite the snow clearance work during winter months latest snow clearance machines will be procured November this year.


Calling upon the need of proactive support to the organization from LAHDC-Kargil, DGBR urged CEC to expedite the settlement of land acquisition cases for construction of Drass bypass so that the work on the project could be commenced at the earliest. ...
