ASHA Workers held a day long conference in Srinagar Seek increase in minimum wages


Srinagar ,July 22, (Scoop News)- One-day conference of ASHA Workers Union, Kashmir was held today which was presided over by Nazia Ji. Delegates from different blocks of Kashmir region participated in the conference.
While inaugurating the conference, Sham Prasad Kesar, senior leader of CITU demanded that ASHA workers be regularized as Health workers. He also demanded social security benefits like pension, gratuity and maternity benefits.
CITU President Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami during his address urged upon the government to provide a dignified monthly honorarium to ASHA workers who essentially act as backbone of the health structure in rural areas of the state. He said the custom of paying poor compensation for extreme hard work should come to an end to protect the women folk working in different sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.
Tarigami said ASHAs work in rough terrains of rural areas tirelessly and selflessly, despite all the difficulties they are confronted with. He cautioned the government to take serious note of the brewing discontentment among these workers and take necessary action for the immediate fulfillment of their demands, failing which, the national health mission may get affected badly.
Ranjan Narula, convener All India Coordination Committee of ASHA Workers exhorting upon ASHAs to strengthen their organization and join the broader struggle against the anti-people policies of the government. She said that the government must acknowledge the contribution of ASHAs to the NHM and the improvement of the health status of the poor, especially mothers and infants.
CITU leaders Om Prakash and Abdul Rashid Najar while addressing the conference demanded that ASHA workers be covered under Aam Aadmi Bima Yojna, payment of all incentives in time, implementation of January 2014 Central Government order for monthly payment of Rs 1000, provision of changing rooms, ID cards, two uniforms and promotion as ANM after training and benefits of BPL Cards.
Rifat Ara General Secretary ASHA Workers’ Union Kashmir placed a detailed report of activities and struggle of the union for raising the workers’ demands. The conference was also addressed by Dilshada Ji, Shaheena Ji, Mubeena Ji, Tahira Ji, Jabeena Ji, Di;lshada Ji, Gulshana Ji, Sayed Rukaya and Haleema Ji.
The conference passed resolutions demanding implementation of minimum wages Act, Social Security Benefits and women empowerment. The conference elected a committee comprising of 15 members With Misra Ji as president, Rifat Ara as General Secretary and Gulshan Ara as Treasurer of the Union.
