Lamas seek help from ASI in preserving, protecting and documenting of antiquities
in over a dozen of identified Gonpas, palaces, castles and stupas




Leh(Ladakh), August 18, (Scoop News)-In a bid to preserve and protect ancient tongkas, murals and metallic statues installed in over a dozen of gonpas (monasteries), All Ladakh Gonpa Association has approached the Archeological Survey of India for scientific documentation of its antique items and structures.


The monasteries, castles, and palaces which have been listed for owning rich collection of centuries old inheritance includes shrine of four lords Gon Khang, Hemis, Thiksey, Shey palace, the stupa in Thissru, Leh palace, Phyang, Lakir,, Alchi, Lamayuru, old castle on Tsemo Hill etc.


All these structures, religious places and antiques are extraordinary in their own way because of their antiquities.


Hemis and Phyang monasteries represent the Hinayana school of thought (Kharegypa or Red sect) while Thiksey Gonpa belongs to Mahayana School (Gelugpa or Yellow Sect). Hinayana means salvation for a few and the Mahayana implies salvation for all.


Hemis gonpa which was built in early 17th century is among the richest monasteries in Ladakh region, has largest tongka, precious stones, gold and gold plated statues, stupas embedded with rubies and other precious stones besides a large library.


Interestingly, the monastery had survived the wanton plundering of the invaders unlike other gonpas, palaces and castles.


Thiksey, on the other hand, represents a largest group of Gelugpa sect followers in the region. Constructed over 350 years ago on the pattern of Patola Palace, the structure is widely pictured monastery because of its resemblance with Patola Palace in Tibet.


According to well informed sources, the officials of the ASI will train the lamas the upkeep and preservation of the antique statues, books, manuscripts, tongkas, murals and wall paintings listed in these monasteries.


Incidentally, Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) too are contributing in their own way by restoring, protecting and maintaining the listed items of these places. Spiritual leader of Tibet, Dalai Lama, visited some of these refurbished structures....
