Congress urges authorities to declare holiday on late Maharaja's birthday | |
Jammu, September 20, (Scoop News)-Several senior leaders of JKPCC has demanded holiday on the birthday of late Maharaja Hari Singh.
In a joint statement PCC general secretaries S. Manjit Singh, Th. Manmohan Singh, Vikram Mlahotra, Smt. Namrata Sharma and co-treasurer Rajnish Sharma have said that Maharaja Hari Singh was a great social reformer
Maharaja opened all public schools, colleges and wells to ‘ untouchables’ in 1931. He was a champion of women’ s emancipation and stopped the rampant practice of child marriage and actively promoted widow remarriage.
He was also successful in rooting out the practice of Sati. His endeavors to promote literacy in the State were proactively inclusive of women’s education.
Besides social reformer Maharaja was a popular personality and the people of the sate both Hindus and Muslims have great love to their last ruler and the authority who annexed Jammu and Kashmir with the Union of India.
They said that it was a long pending demand of the people of the state that September 23 the birth day of Maharaja Hari Singh ji be declared as holiday and the Govt. should accept this demanded without losing any further time, they added.... |
