CUK’s Tourism studies Deptt holds seminar on ‘Sustainable Tourism: A Tool for Dev’

Srinagar, October 12, (Scoop News)-The department of Tourism Studies, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) today organised a daylong seminar on ‘Sustainable Tourism: A Tool for Development’ at Nowgam-I academic block here.
The seminar was part of the Paryatan Parv, an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism Government of India.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir, Registrar, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, Dean School of Business Studies and head of the Department Tourism Studies, Prof. S Fayyaz Ahmad, adjunct faculty Dr. Saleem Beg and Dr. G.R Ghani other faculty members and students were also present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir said, “We not only need to sustain the tourism, but also have to further develop the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Valley. He asked the students to sensitize the people about the deteriorating condition of tourist destinations in Kashmir and urged the masses to refrain from polluting them further. He also asked the students to organise a cleanliness drive at the tourist places.
Registrar, Prof. M Afzal Zargar in his address said that tourism has a huge potential in Kashmir and is providing sustenance to the thousands of families. Prof. Zargar said that the valley is repository of medicinal plants and there was a dire need to promote it.
He said that there are many places in Kashmir, which have huge tourism potential and these need to be bring on the tourism map.
Dean School of Business Studies and Head department of Tourism Studies, Prof. S Fayyaz Ahmad while welcoming the guests deliberated on the role of sustained tourism, as a tool to boost the tourism in Valley. He said the year 2017 has being marked as Sustainable Tourism year, by the United Nations and in this connection the department organised the event. He added tourism in Kashmir will sustain only if we make it eco-friendly.
Giving details about the event, Assistant Professor, Mr. Ashaq Hussain Najar explained the‘Paryatan Parv’ saying that the objective of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India was to attract the attention of Non Resident Indians (NRIs) towards the country and help in boosting the tourism sector in India.
Adjunct faculty Dr. Saleem Beg and Dr. G.R Ghani and Kashmiri travel agent based in England, Mr. Muhammad Yasin also spoke on the occasion.
The students presented a skit, which reflected the deteriorating condition of the Dal Lake and other tourist places in the Valley and participated in a quiz programme. Research scholar from the department Mr. Mudasir Mir also made a presentation during the event.
Assistant Professor Ms. Asra Wani conducted the programme proceedings while as Assistant Professor, Mr. Faizan Ashraf Mir proposed the vote of thanks.
