CUK’s Central Library, Elsevier holds workshop on scholarly publishing

Srinagar, November 14, (Scoop News)- Central Library of the Central University of Kashmir (CUK) in collaboration with Elsevier organized a daylong ‘Author Workshop on Scholarly Publishing’ at Nowgam-I academic block of the varsity here.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir, Director, Research and Development, Prof. Abdul Gani, Librarian, Dr. Abdul Majid Baba, Director Nowgam Campus-I and Dean School of Education, Prof. N.A Nadeem, Director, Research Solutions Sales, Elsevier, Dr. Sangeeta Mehta, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Information Sciences, University of Kashmir, Dr. Sumeer Gul, Heads and Coordinators, faculty members of different departments and students were also present on the occasion.
In the presidential address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir said the research findings should not be confined to the four walls of the library, but should contribute immensely towards the overall development of the society. “The scholars should choose the research topic which have local relevance and then share the findings with the concerned stakeholders for implementing the same on the ground,” he said. Prof. Mehraj ud Din described research as the backbone of higher education, particularly the universities, adding that the Central University of Kashmir is more focused on the quality of the research rather than the quantity. Prof. Mir said the foundation of the quality teaching is based on the quality of research.
Director, Research and Development, Prof. Abdul Gani said that despite several limitations, the university was putting in best efforts to create excellent research culture in the varsity. He said that it has been made mandatory for the research scholars to provide an executive summary of their research findings so that the same could be shared with the relevant stakeholders for further necessary action. Prof. Gani said that R&D has taken slew of measures and was trying hard to make the university as the preferable destiny for research scholars. He added that the research should not be degree oriented, but instead should present the solution to the problems prevalent in the society.
Director, Nowgam Campus-I, Prof. N.A Nadeem said that most of the research carried out by the scholars across the country was degree and job oriented. “The research should further improve the quality and way of life in the society,” he added. Prof. Nadeem also underscored the need of publishing in-house Research Journals and asked all the departments in the varsity to initiate steps in this direction.
In his welcome address, Librarian, Dr. Abdul Majid Baba explained the theme of the workshop and said the research methodology, ethics and plagiarism should be taken into consideration while doing research on any topic. He said the World Wide Web has also assisted the scholars, by way of providing huge information on a particular topic. He thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the university administration for extending all possible support for the conduct of the workshop and said that more such activities would be conducted in near future for the benefit of the budding researchers.
In her keynote address, Director, Research Solutions Sales, Elsevier, Dr. Sangeeta Mehta said the quality and not the quantity of the research matters. She said that several organizations, including hers have changed their business modules and plans after receiving inputs from the researchers. Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Information Sciences, University of Kashmir, Dr. Sumeer Gul said that scholars have to follow the research standards while pursuing their research.
Later on, a technical session was held in which the participants made presentations, regarding the theme.
Assistant Librarian, Ms. Huma conducted the programme proceedings while as Assistant Librarian, Dr. Tariq Ahmad Shah, proposed the vote of thanks.
