Parents and scholars appeal Wani to return
students of AMU astounded to see his photo on social media holding a gun instead of a pen

Srinagar, January 10, (Scoop News)-Besides his family, over a score of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students have appealed Mannan Wani (26), a research scholar, who had reportedly joined Hizbul Mujhadeen (HM), to return.

“I have fed you with my blood. Forgive me if I have ever misbehaved or maltreated you which I believe I never did. I have always prayed for your wellbeing and I want to live with you now at our home. Please return to your home as we are waiting for you;” appealed his wailing mother on a local private news channel on Tuesday evening. His father described it as a “most unfortunate happening” in his life.

Expressing their astonishment over Wani’s move, the students of AMU including some native Kashmiris have asked him to return at the earliest “as your joining the militant ranks can have an adverse affect on the reputation of the University of which you were also an alumnus.” The students described him as an icon of youth and also recounted his debating expertise and oratory display.

In an open letter to him, they stated, “we were astounded when we saw your photo on social media holding a gun instead of a pen. It pained us to even consider that you have chosen a path ridden with endless troubles and immense sacrifice. We are still prepared to believe that it is not too late for you to think about your decision.”

They urged the state government to ensure his safe return and hoped that no harassment was meted out to Wani thereafter.

The students averred that “you could participate in the information of our society. You could fill the lacunae in the leadership that we always claim to face. You could directly address the people if you choose non violent path over the violent one, without burdening your conscience.” , students of AMU astounded to see his photo on social media holding a gun instead of a pen.
