Upward swing registered in tourist arrivals in Ladakh
inflow of holidaymakers dipping in Jammu and Kashmir regions during past half a decade

Leh(Ladakh), January 15, (Scoop News)-While the tourist arrivals in Jammu and Kashmir regions are conspicuously dipping over past half a decade, the inflow of holidaymakers to Ladakh region is, however, on ascend despite government’s tall claims of creating tourism infrastructure across the state.
State tourism department’s efforts for promoting the trade by holding over a score of travel marts at different places in the country besides visiting abroad has not proved beneficial for generating any business in the tourism sector so far.
The official data confirmed the number of tourists to the state is dwindling with each passing year during past five year and the number has declined from 12,502,501 in 2012 to 7,908,286 tourists till October 2017. However, these numbers excluded the pilgrims who visited the Amarnath and Vaishnov Devi cave shrines during the same period.
The total arrivals between 2012 and 2017 into the state have been 12,5 million arrivals in 2012 followed by 10.9 million in 2013, 9.53 million in 2014, 9.2 million in 2015, 8.43 million in 2016 and 7.31 till October 2017.
The Ladakh region has been consistently registering upward swing in the number of holidaymakers for past over five years. In 2012 the number of tourists arrivals to Ladakh region was 1.8 lakh followed by 1.4 lakh in 2013, 1.8 lakh in 2014, 1.5 lakh in 2015, 1,8 lakh in 2016 and 2.6 lakh till October in 2017 .
Ladakh , a high altitude desert, sheltered from the clouds of the Indian monsoon by the barrier of the Great Himalayas is emerging as most favoured tourist destination among domestic tourist traffic. The foreign tourists are attracted to the natural joiv-de-virre of the Ladakhis free rein by the ancient traditions of the region, palaces, monasteries, mani walls, chortens, snow bound high altitude peaks, lakes and flora and fauna.
Contrary to this, the tourist arrivals in Kashmir has been recording a constant fall of footfalls for past over half a decade as 1.93 million tourists visited the region in 2012 followed by 1.53 million in 2013, 1,54 million in 2014, 1.28 million in 2015, 1.43 million 2016 and 1.31 million in 2017.
Similarly, the arrivals in Jammu too have indicated decrease in the arrivals during the same period like in 2012 the total number of holidaymakers was 10. 39 million followed by 9. 29 million in 2013, 7.8 million in 2014, 7.78 million in 2015, 6.82 million in 2016 and 5.74 million till October in 2017.
Tourism sector accounts for about 6.9 percent of the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Jammu and Kashmir does not figure in top 10 domestic destinations on the basis on number of tourist arrivals when compared to some other states in the country.
