Swedish Skier lost his life in snow avalanche, another rescued
Minister expresses grief over tragic death of Skier


Jammu, January 18, (Scoop News)- Two tourists came under an avalanche at Upperwat, Gulmarg today and one foreign tourist identified as Daniel, from Sweden lost his life, but his colleague Benjamin was rescued by Joint Rescue Team and shifted to the Sub District Hospital, Tangmarg and his condition is stable, where he was resuscitated and is stable.

Minister for Disaster Management, Relief Rehabilitation & Reconstruction Javaid Mustafa Mir today made a statement in the House regarding the Avalanche incident that occurred at Gulmarg wherein one Swedish skier namely Daniel died and another namely Benjamin was seriously injured.
Mir said the injured is currently being treated at Tangmarg hospital. The body of Daniel has been retrieved and kept in Tangmarg hospital. He said the government will make arrangements for shifting the body of the deceased skier to his native place and extend all necessary treatment and support to the injured.
Responding to a point raised by MLA Mubarak Gul and MLA Altaf Ahmed Wani in the House, the Minister said that administration had already issued timely avalanche warnings and advisory for the visitors not to tread into avalanche prone areas.
He said the Government will enquire into the lapses and circumstances under which the authorities allowed them to the avalanche prone area despite advance warning.
The Minister expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic death of the Swedish skier and extended heartfelt condolences to his family on behalf of the State Government.

Meanwhile as per information received from Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), “Low Danger Avalanche Warning” exists in higher reaches of Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil, Leh, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Udhampur, Ramban, Kishtwar, Doda.
One Tata sumo bearing number JK14B 016 on way from Banihal to Neel, met with an accident at village Halwagan, falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Ramsu, resulting in on-spot death of one person, who was later identified as Ghulam Rasool son of Abdul Samad, aged around 54 years, resident of Halwagan. Eight injured passengers were rescued and evacuated to District Hospital Ramban.
