Paigam-E-Mohabbat : A Silver Lining in the Dark Clouds of the Paradise

By Mukesh Kumar

I have been on the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus since 14 years and I am genuinely concerned about the Kashmir issue. I have been closely following Sri Sri Ravishankar especially after his maiden visit to the JNU campus in November 2017 where he spoke on the Paigam-e-Mohabbat during the press conference at the JNU Convention Centre. I was surprised and astonished by the negative reporting of the media on one of the milestone event in the history of Kashmir post independence.

Every cloud has a silver lining, going by the phrase let’s analyze the spiritual leader and humanitarian Sri Sri Ravishankar’s recent visit to Srinagar to address one of the biggest ever gathering of people from the valley where people came to listen for the first time after independence to a Hindu spiritual leader. The event was organized by a civil society group named Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee (JK&CC) entitled Paigam-e-Mohabbat,(Message of Love), Peace in Paradise. Without giving a second thought JK&CC commands a huge applause for its noble effort to bring thousands of people together on a common platform from the remotest part of the valley. What is even more commendable is that it was happening right at the heart of the city at the Sher-E-Kashmir International Convention Centre.

As an eye witness of the event I saw people started gathering at the venue as early as 08:00 am and 40% of them were women. Many of them left their homes at 03:00 am who had come from far flung areas like Sophian to ensure that they reach the venue before some restrictions were imposed as just 4 days ago there was an encounter reported in Sophian where 5 people were reported killed. What was disheartening that only 2 female police guards were deployed at the venue, the attendees were being frisked outside the venue and were not even allowed to carry essential medicines or water bottles. On the pretext of security even the food packets were kept at a distance of 5Kms. away from the venue that was arranged by the volunteers of JK&CC. Many vehicles were not allowed to enter the city that had come from the interior parts of the valley by the city administration. The anguish and displeasure of some attendees can be accounted to the above mentioned facts.

But what was heartening to see was that people risked their lives and thronged in large numbers to listen to a person who shows a ray of hope for the local population in particular and Kashmir in general, who has substantial experience in Conflict Resolution and enormous experience in peace initiatives, FARC, Colombia is the best example. This was not a maiden attempt of a non-political humanitarian initiative as an event of similar nomenclature was organized on November 10th last year at the Art of Living, International Centre at Bengaluru where a reconciliation program for the family members of martyred security personnel, victims of cross-firing and slain militants shared the stage to heal their hearts and give peace a chance.

Some sections of the media reported that the attendees were lured for cricket kits and other utilities, my humble submission to these media houses is to stop misquoting and misinterpreting the facts as no intelligent man from the valley would risk his life for a cricket kit and come from the remotest part of the valley given the fact that the area is very sensitive and a firing can break out any time of the day. The story doesn’t ends here given the prior notice to the local administration there were no adequate security arrangements, not even a single ambulance was made available. In fact for a crowd of 11 thousand attendees there were just 10 police guards.

One thing is very clear that the under preparedness of the local administration was very much visible at the venue and a deliberate attempt to sabotage a peace event has been done by major sections of the media. Undoubtedly the issue of Kashmir has been one the longest geo-political issue that has remained unsolved till date but an event of such magnitude keeps the flames of hope lightened and strengthened the idea that peace shall prevail someday in the Paradise on the earth.
