BJP rebuts Geelani’s claim of being approached by an IB officer for holding talks with Centre
terms it factually incorrect; Dalai Lama describes JK as a tricky issue, counsels to maintain peace of mind

Srinagar, March 18, (Scoop News)-On March 16, when Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, claimed that he was approached by an unidentified intelligence bureau (IB) officer with an offer to open a dialogue with New Delhi, everyone was surprised.

Political analysts wonder what had prompted Government of India (GoI) to initiate a dialogue with him so suddenly when their ‘Special Representative’, Dineshwar Sharma, is still on the ground visiting places and meeting the delegations.

In a statement issued on Friday, spokesperson for Geelani, GA Gowhar, said the IB officer proposed a dialogue between New Delhi and Geelani on Thursday night. “He (Geelani) refused to talk unless and until the Kashmir dispute is addressed in its historical perspective and asked India to acknowledge the disputed status of Kashmir and begin demilitarization to hold referendum.”

A senior police official, seeking not to be named, when contacted said “let Geelani name the IB officer, he might have introduced himself before making the offer. Could be a ploy to stay in limelight?”

“What is their contribution to the society except announcing shutdown calls? They cause great inconvenience to the people particularly to students who miss their classes. The GoI has made these separatist leaders impertinent and inconsequential,” he added.

Ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) sources asserted that separatist leaders’ statement was not based on facts wherein he said that an IB officer had approached him to join fresh round of negotiations with New Delhi and said that there is no truth in his claim.

Geelani should engage with the Centre’s Special Representative, Sharma, who has been engaged for the purpose and the issue cannot be discussed at any other level, the sources added.

Meanwhile, Tibetan spiritual leader and Nobel Prize winner for Peace, Dalai Lama, said he wants to express special greetings and prayers for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said Jammu and Kashmir was a complex issue but the people here, historically, have very close links, he told reporters on his arrival in Jammu on Saturday.

Dalai Lama was invited by the Central University of Jammu (CUJ) to be the chief guest at the University’s first ever convocation on Sunday.

“The state is a tangled issue but having peace of mind is very important. No matter how knotty the issue is one should maintain the peace of mind,” he added.

“Mentally, physically and emotionally human beings are the same everywhere. Everyone wants happiness and the foundation to this happiness is peace of mind. We should always have that and should not let anger overcome us. Anger always brings disaster and prevent us from using our intelligence effectively,” the spiritual leader ...
