| CUK holds VCs/Nodal officers meet cum workshop on ‘quality control in higher education: opportunities and challenges’ | |
Srinagar, April 14, (Scoop News)-Central University of Kashmir (CUK) in collaboration with consortium conducting the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET-2018) organised a Vice-Chancellors/Nodal Officers meet cum 3-day workshop on “Quality Control In Higher Education; Opportunities And Challenges.” Vice Chancellors of Six Central Universities and Nodal officers from eight central universities and Executive Officer of BA School of Economics are participating in the workshop besides the faculty of the Central University of Kashmir.
The workshop was organised to discuss the strategies and best practices in higher education planning, policymaking, execution and control. While welcoming the guests, Registrar Prof. Mohammad Afzal Zargar elaborated upon the need for introduction of academic audit, use of ICT, NKN and other networks alongside development of forward linkages with the industries and research institutions and backward linkages with the institutions of senior and secondary schools. He also elaborated upon the need of reforms in examination patterns and also focus on meaningful research to establish higher quality standards. The role and inclusion of private organizations in higher education amid controlled mechanism can play a key role in improving the GER of the country, added Prof Zargar.
Addressing the gathering, Central University of Kashmir, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir expressed optimism that CUCET is providing a wider canvass to the aspirants to seek admission in different Universities of the country. He underscored the need for sharing of common resources, common curriculum and exchange of faculty and students. Prof. Mir divulged that moral education and ethical conditioning of the students takes place at an early stage, but higher education has to make them relevant to the needs of the society.
Delivering the inaugural address, Central University of Rajasthan, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.K Pujari , stated that in order to effect the students exchange programmes, we need to have a slight differentiation within the broader framework of similarity. He revealed that differentiation in our programmes paves way for signing MoUs. He also suggested that CUCET platform after their commendable contributions towards admission processes can come forward and explore extension of collaborations and exchange of faculty and studetnts among the member universities.
The workshop on the theme would discuss on a number of subthemes over a period of three days amid seven technical sessions through lead lectures, discussions and panel discussions.
The technical session-I based on a panel discussion on Sharing of Best and Innovative Practices & future challenges of Universities with Central University of Gujarat, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. S.A. Bari in chair and Dean Faculty of Education Central University of Kashmir, Prof. N.A Nadeem as the co-chairperson.
Commencing the discussion Prof. Nadeem stated that the canvas of collaborations and integrations need to be expanded for the benefit of present and potential students of the Universities. He hinted towards MoUs signed by the Central University of Kashmir with two other sister universities in the areas of credit transfer after identifying core and flexible components, student mobility, major research projects, holding of seminars and exchange of faculty.
Other panelists who spoke on the occasion include Prof. G.Gopa Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Kerala, Prof. A.P Dash, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Prof. Arun K Pujar, Vice-Chancellor Central University of Rajasthan, Dr. Muhammad Aslam, HoD Geology Central University of Karnatka, Prof Jagdeep Singh, Registrar, Central University of Punjab, Dr. Gaurav Sehgal from Central University of Jammu, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Vice-Chancellor Central University of Kashmir and Prof. S.A Bari, Vice-Chancellor Central University of Gujarat.
The good practices shared by various panelists during the deliberations included: Some of the universities have introduced pre-charge cards/smart dual chip cards for students to avail washing facilities, avail ATM facilities and also for payment of fee, besides e-kiosks in collaboration with banks have been installed; assistant Professors as Research Guides are recommend by the selection committee at the time of selection; Some universities have introduced flexibility in changing synopsis from time to time on quite logical grounds; new courses are introduced and innovations brought about after brainstorming sessions with experts and peer groups; industry linkages are developed by getting sponsorships from industry for payment of salaries to staff for specific courses, internships and employment to the students so trained; other than UGC , tie ups are being made with various central ministries for getting funding for different programmes and projects; inter-se interaction is ensured among the faculty at a common lunch hosted by the joint mess on daily basis; MoUs have been signed with foreign universities and Collaborations have been evolved with foreign universities for credit transfer and faculty mobility; IITs have been engaged as mentors to cope up with the emerging trends in different fields of enquiry; technology has been diffused to community by installing facilities like Telemetric weather stations for farmers to help in crop planning; library timing is extended to 18 hours a day for which security guards are engaged to escort the female students during nigh hours; on-line examinations have been introduced; better file tracking systems have been introduced; awards have been introduced for meritorious students and good performers in the faculty and administrative staff; research focus is shifted to issue witnessed in the respective geographical areas; research on incidence of cancer, prognostic Tests for colon cancers by Central University of Punjab is an instance in point; IT awareness programmes, coaching classes for administrative service competitive examinations are organised in the larger interests of the society; curriculum design and development has been made a continuous affair to cope up with the changes in the academic environment; student participation in statutory bodies is ensured for a participative culture for collective wisdom and other practices.
Senior faculty members and other functionaries of the CUK and other Central Universities and other varsities were also present on the occasion.
The inaugural session was conduct by Head Department of Management, CUK, Prof. Farooq Ahmad Shah while as Director Research and Development, Prof. Abdul Gani proposed the vote of thanks.
