Ladakh has potential to emerge as ‘adventure capital’ of India: Jora



Leh(Ladakh), August 21, (Scoop News)-Ladakh has the potential to emerge as adventure capital of India- if not already become one, former state Tourism Minister and leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP), Nawang Rigzin Jora, told Scoop News on Tuesday.
The region offers challenges to adventurers, he said adding that Zanskar River which is grade 4-5 is one of the most challenging rivers in India along with Tons River of Uttrakhand for white water river rafting ; so are other Indian rivers at some stretches.
Jora said white water rafting has been picked up by domestic tourists and has emerged as a popular activity among them.
“What is needed is for the outfitter to be professional and take care of the safety aspect,” he asserted and remarked that “he was happy that these aspects are being taken care by the tour operators and Outfitters.”
“The event needs to be put on the tourism calendar as an annual event and the tourism department should come forward to help with event to make it a national event,” suggested the fomer Tourism Minister.
Expressing happiness that all the operators and rivers guides are locals, Jora said and added that this is important for the growth of local economy. Any trade that doesn’t benefit the local economy is no good, he pointed out.
Jora invited tour and travel operators of the region to come forward with whatever help they might need.
On Sunday, Jora flagged off world’s highest water rafting and Kayaking competition from Skarpochey starting point in which over a score of rafting teams from civil, army, Indian Air Force (IAF) and paramilitary Indo- Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) besides nearly 60 Kayaks belonging to different parts of India participated.
Mountain Fire covered the distance of about 14 km in 40 minutes and 10 seconds and emerged as the winner followed by ITBP who covered the same distance in 40 minutes and 17 seconds. In Kayaking Rishi Rana was declared the winner while Shivam Gurung came second in the race.
The event was organized jointly by All Ladakh Rafting operators in association with All Ladakh Tour Operators Association (ALTOA) to boost adventure tourism in the region.
Jora congratulated the organizers for holding such adventurous event on River Zanskar, the river famous for its rapids and currents.
